Why go

Italy's largest theme park sits on the southern shore of Lake Garda near Peschiera, and is big enough to fill two days without repetition. The line-up runs from dark rides and a Peppa Pig area for the very small through to Raptor, a wing coaster, and a vertical-drop dive machine. Theming is enthusiastic, the landscaping is mature, and there is real shade when July does its worst.

The location is the genuinely useful part: lake beaches, the Sirmione peninsula and Verona all sit within half an hour, so a park day slots into a family week rather than defining it. Crowds peak on July and August weekends. Arrive at opening, because Italian families tend to come later and the queues invert entirely by the middle of the afternoon.

From our guides

Coasters run from gentle to the wing-over thrills of Raptor, Peppa Pig Land mops up the toddlers and the attached SEA LIFE aquarium earns the combination ticket. Italians arrive late, so be at the gates for opening and you'll bank the big rides by noon — then reward everyone with pizza and a lakeside swim at Peschiera.

Featured in Ten theme park trips that are actually worth the hype

Things to do

  1. Raptor

A wing coaster that flies riders either side of the track through inversions close to the ground. The park's headline thrill by a distance.

  2. Peppa Pig Land

A self-contained area of gentle rides and water play for toddlers and pre-schoolers, with plenty of seating for the adults.

  3. SEA LIFE aquarium

A separate attraction next to the park with a walk-through ocean tunnel, worth the combined ticket on a hot afternoon.

  4. Jungle Rapids

The long-running raft ride, which guarantees a soaking and is the sensible thing to do at two in the afternoon in July.

  5. Sirmione

A castle and Roman villa ruins on a narrow peninsula reaching into Lake Garda, twenty minutes away and an easy half-day.

  6. Peschiera del Garda

The walled lakeside town beside the park, with a swimming beach and a station on the Milan to Venice railway.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Caselle (VRN)

Nearest airport to Gardaland, about 15km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Peschiera del Garda

About 25 minutes by car from Verona airport (VRN) to Peschiera del Garda, or take the airport bus into Verona Porta Nuova and a train on to Peschiera in around 15 minutes.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

A free shuttle bus runs between Peschiera station and the park gates in a few minutes, so the whole trip works without a car. Lake ferries from Peschiera reach Sirmione, Lazise and Garda for the non-park days.

Public transport: Good: mainline trains along the Milan to Venice route stop at Peschiera, and the station shuttle drops you at the entrance.

Where to stay

Family campsites and holiday villages dominate, alongside the park's own themed hotels and small lakeside three-stars. Self-catering with a pool is the standard family booking here.

  • Best base overall

    Peschiera del Garda

A walled lakeside town on the Milan to Venice railway, with a shuttle bus to the park gates and swimming, gelato and pizza for the evenings. It gets loud in high summer.

    Ronchi

The cluster at the park entrance, where the Gardaland hotels sit within a few minutes' walk of the turnstiles. Ideal for being first through the gates, dull for anything else.

  • Best with children

    Lazise

Ten minutes north, a pretty harbour town ringed by large family campsites and holiday villages with pools and kids' clubs. Choose a site with its own shuttle or you will drive daily.

  • Best value

    Castelnuovo del Garda

The inland village behind the park has ordinary bed and breakfasts at ordinary prices, five minutes from the gates by car. No lake, no view, no queue at breakfast.

Worth knowing before you book: Campsites and park hotels sell out for late July and August by early spring, and most impose a week-long minimum stay in peak season.

Good to know

Timing
Be at the gates for opening and take the big coasters first. Italian visitors arrive late morning and the park stays busy into the evening.
Book ahead
Dated online tickets are cheaper than the gate and guarantee entry on the capped days in August.
With kids
Height limits apply on the main coasters, generally between 120 and 140 centimetres. Check them before promising anything.
Pack this
Sun protection, refillable water bottles and a change of clothes for the water rides. July heat beside the lake is serious.
Getting there
Peschiera del Garda station sits on the main line between Milan, Verona and Venice, with a shuttle bus to the park entrance.
