Why go

One long main street, a valley floor of vines and a horseshoe of mountains close enough to change colour by the hour. The town was settled by French Huguenots in the 1680s and still trades on it, in the wine and in the road names. The estates ringing the valley hold a concentration of serious restaurants that would be unusual in a city twenty times the size.

It sits about an hour east of Cape Town and works either as a two-night stop within a Cape trip or as a base for the whole winelands, with Stellenbosch and Paarl inside half an hour. February and March bring harvest and real heat; June and July are cold, wet, cheap and rather good beside a fire. Very little happens after dinner.

From our guides

The hop-on wine tram trundles between cellar doors, solving the driving question entirely. Rand-for-pound the tastings, food and rooms are absurd value by European standards. Come in February for harvest heat, or June for log fires, red wine and misty peaks.

Things to do

  1. The wine tram

A hop-on tram and bus loop between estates, which removes the drink-driving problem entirely. Lines fill quickly, so start early in the day.

  2. Huguenot Memorial Museum

The town's origin story, covering the French Protestant refugees who arrived from 1688 and planted the valley's first vines.

  3. Franschhoek Pass

The mountain road east out of the valley climbs to viewpoints over the whole basin. Ten minutes' drive for the best perspective on the place.

  4. Cap Classique tasting

South Africa's traditional-method sparkling wine is a valley speciality, and several estates built their reputations on it alone.

  5. Mont Rochelle reserve

Fynbos-covered slopes above the town with marked trails, including a steady climb to a ridge looking down over the vineyards.

  6. Stellenbosch

The older university town half an hour west, with oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch gables and a larger, less polished wine scene.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Cape Town (CPT)

Nearest airport to Franschhoek, about 48km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Franschhoek

About an hour by car from Cape Town (CPT), east on the N1 and then through Paarl into the valley.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The village is a single walkable main street, and the hop-on wine tram loops between the estates so nobody has to drive.

Public transport: Almost none: no trains and no useful buses, so it is a hire car, a transfer, or the wine tram once you are there.

Worth knowing before you book: The South African summer from December to February books out well ahead, and the valley's best restaurants need reserving weeks before, not on the day.

Good to know

Book ahead
The valley's best-known restaurants and the tram both fill weeks in advance through the December to March high season.
Driving
Tastings and driving do not mix, and South African drink-drive limits are low. Use the tram or hire a driver for the day.
Timing
Harvest runs from roughly February to April. Winter is the quiet, wet, fireside season and room rates fall accordingly.
Cash or card
Cards are accepted everywhere, small estates included. Keep some rand for tips, which are expected at around ten per cent.
Safety
The town centre is calm and walkable by day. As elsewhere in the country, avoid unlit roads at night and leave nothing visible in a parked car.
