Èze
A stone village coiled around a peak four hundred metres above the Riviera, its lanes too narrow for anything but footsteps and bougainvillea.

Why go
The village sits on a rock roughly 400 metres above the Mediterranean, between Nice and Monaco, and is essentially one vertical maze: vaulted passages, stone stairways, artisan workshops and a few small squares, none of it open to vehicles. There is little to do in the conventional sense. You climb, you look, you sit down for a long time, and the sea does the rest of the work.
Coaches arrive from mid-morning and the lanes are shoulder to shoulder until late afternoon, which is the argument for staying overnight or coming early. It works best as one part of a Riviera trip based in Nice, twenty minutes west by road or rail along the coast. Summer is hot and full; May, June and September give you the same light with far shorter queues.

From our guides
Day-trippers from Nice swamp it between ten and five, so stay the night — the two hotels inside the village keep the evenings for guests. Watch the Mediterranean go pink from the exotic garden at the summit, then descend the Nietzsche path to the sea next morning.

Things to do
-
Jardin Exotique
A cactus garden planted through the ruins of the medieval castle at the summit, with views along the coast that stretch for miles on clear days.
-
Nietzsche path to the sea
The steep, rocky mule track down to the shore takes about ninety minutes. Walk down rather than up, and take the train back.
-
Notre-Dame de l'Assomption
The eighteenth-century parish church hides a theatrical baroque interior behind a plain façade. A cool, quiet pause halfway up the climb.
-
Perfume workshops
Two long-established perfume houses run free tours and shops in and below the village, a legacy of nearby Grasse and its flower fields.
-
Pebble coves at sea level
Èze-sur-Mer, at the bottom of the hill, has its own railway halt, a small beach and a fraction of the people found above.
-
Day trip to Monaco
The principality is fifteen minutes east by bus or train, with the old town on its rock, the oceanographic museum and the harbour.

Two small luxury hotels in the perched village, plus chambres d'hôtes and coastal hotels below. Nothing large, and the choice at any price is genuinely small.

Best base overall
Èze village
Staying inside the walls buys you the village after the coaches leave, which is the reason to come. There are only a couple of places to sleep and they are expensive.

Beaulieu-sur-Mer
Five minutes along the coast, with more hotels, a marina and a station on the same line. Pleasant rather than dramatic, and busy in summer.

Villefranche-sur-Mer
A deep bay with coloured houses and good restaurants, ten minutes towards Nice. Parking is difficult and the old town is all steps.

Worth knowing before you book: Village rooms number in the handful and go months ahead for summer. Parking is by paid car park only, and the last bus down the hill is early.

Good to know
- Timing
- Between about ten and five the lanes are packed with day-trippers. Early morning and evening belong to the village itself.
- Pack this
- Proper shoes. Everything is cobbles, steps and slope, and the Nietzsche path is loose rock in places.
- Driving
- Cars stop at the bottom, as the village is entirely pedestrian. Parking is limited and fills early through the summer.
- Getting there
- The coastal bus from Nice and Monaco stops at the village gate. Trains serve the sea-level halt, linked to the village by a steep climb or a shuttle.
- With kids
- The stairs and drops make pushchairs unworkable. Older children generally enjoy the maze; toddlers rarely do.
