Why go

Milos formed from volcanic activity rather than the limestone that shapes most of the Cyclades, and it shows in landscapes found almost nowhere else in Greece: the white lunar rock formations at Sarakiniko, sulphur-streaked cliffs and over seventy beaches scattered around a jagged coastline. Small fishing hamlets like Klima keep their boathouses, called syrmata, painted in bright colours right at the waterline, doors opening straight onto the sea.

Couples tend to base themselves in Plaka, the hilltop capital, for evening walks between bougainvillea-covered lanes and sunset views over the Aegean. A boat trip is close to essential here, since many of the best coves, including the pirate hideout of Kleftiko, are reached only by water. May, June and September avoid the busiest ferry crowds while keeping the sea warm enough to swim.

From our guides

Milos does Santorini's colours without Santorini's queues. Stay in Plaka for alley-and-bougainvillea evenings, and charter a small boat around Kleftiko's pirate coves for the day.

Things to do

  1. Sarakiniko

A stretch of white volcanic rock eroded into smooth, otherworldly shapes, more like a moonscape than a typical Greek beach.

  2. Kleftiko sea caves

A cluster of white rock formations and hidden coves once used by pirates, accessible only by boat and popular for swimming and snorkelling.

  3. Klima's fishing houses

A row of brightly painted boathouses built directly into the cliffside, with boats stored on the ground floor and living quarters above.

  4. Plaka village

The island's hilltop capital, a maze of whitewashed lanes leading to a Venetian castle ruin with sunset views over the whole island.

  5. Milos catacombs

Early Christian burial tunnels carved into soft volcanic rock, among the largest and best preserved of their kind in Greece.

  6. Firiplaka and Tsigrado beaches

Two of the island's more accessible coloured-sand beaches, reachable by road rather than boat alone, each with a distinct character.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Milos Island (MLO)

The airport is on the doorstep.

  2. Then

    To Plaka

Milos airport (MLO) is about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or transfer to Plaka and Adamas; most visitors instead arrive by ferry from Piraeus, three to seven hours depending on the boat.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

A hire car, quad or scooter is how the island's beaches are reached, many down rough tracks; Kleftiko can only be seen from the water, on a day boat from Adamas.

Public transport: A summer bus network links Adamas with Plaka and a handful of beaches, but it will not get you to the remote coves.

Where to stay

Small studios and family-run rooms dominate, with a growing set of boutique suites in Pollonia and Plaka. No large resorts, and villas with pools are still uncommon.

  • Best base overall

    Plaka and Trypiti

The hilltop capital has the alley walks, sunset castle and the best small restaurants, with the island's roads radiating from it. Parking is a genuine ordeal and nothing is level.

  • Best for couples

    Pollonia

A small fishing village on the north-east tip with waterside tavernas, a sheltered beach and the Kimolos ferry. Quiet, well kept and priced accordingly.

  • Best value

    Adamas

The port town, where the ferries dock and most of the cheaper rooms, car hire and supermarkets are. Less charming than Plaka, but far more practical with luggage.

  • Best with children

    Provatas and Paleochori

South-coast bays with sandy, shallow entries and a few beachfront places to stay. Very little beyond the beach, so evenings mean driving back up to Plaka.

Worth knowing before you book: Milos has a small bed stock and July and August sell out by spring, along with the hire cars, which you should book at the same time as the room.
