The festival

For most of August, Edinburgh turns itself into one continuous venue: church halls, basements and converted classrooms all become stages, and the programme runs to thousands of shows spanning comedy, theatre, dance and everything in between. The unpredictability is the appeal as much as the big names; walking into an unknown show at a fringe venue, paying what you can afford, produces some of the best and worst nights of any festival calendar. Street performers fill the Royal Mile from morning onward.

Build a trip around two or three booked shows a day, leaving gaps to browse listings and queue for returns or unticketed slots. Accommodation is the real constraint, since prices multiply and beds vanish months out, so book by spring or plan to commute from Glasgow. The city's usual sights, the castle, the Royal Mile, Arthur's Seat, stay open throughout, giving daytime structure between evening shows.

From our guides

Build days around two or three bookings and leave gaps for punts on unknowns — the Free Fringe's pay-what-you-like shows produce the best stories. Beds are the battle; book by March or commute from Glasgow. Late-night comedy at the Monkey Barrel beats anything on television.

Make a trip of it

  1. Free Fringe shows

Pay-what-you-like performances, often the source of the festival's best surprises and stories, staged in basements and back rooms across the city.

  2. Royal Mile street performance

An open-air stage of comedy, music and stunts running the length of the historic street throughout the daytime hours.

  3. Monkey Barrel Comedy

A well-regarded stand-up venue hosting late-night sets throughout the festival, popular with comedians testing new material after their main shows.

  4. Assembly, Pleasance and Underbelly

The major multi-show venue complexes that anchor much of the official programme, each hosting dozens of different productions daily.

  5. Edinburgh Castle

Open throughout August, with views over the festival crowds gathering below on the Royal Mile and the wider city.

  6. Late-night cabaret and variety

An after-hours strand of the programme running well past midnight for those still going once the main shows finish.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Edinburgh (EDI)

Nearest airport to Edinburgh, about 11km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Edinburgh

The tram and the airport bus both take about 30 minutes from Edinburgh airport (EDI) into the city centre.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Fringe venues cluster around the Old Town and Bristo Square and are all walkable, though the hills and the August crowds slow everything down.

Public transport: Buses and trams run late through the festival, and trains reach Glasgow in under an hour if you end up commuting.

Where to base yourself

In August the city rents everything: student halls, private flats, guesthouses and hotels. Ordinary hotel supply is small, so short-let flats carry most of the crowd.

  • Best base overall

    Old Town (Southside and Newington)

Within walking distance of the Pleasance, Underbelly and the Bristo Square venues, which saves hours across a week. Also the loudest part of the city until dawn.

  • Best for couples

    New Town

Georgian streets ten minutes from the venues, with better restaurants and calmer nights. Prices are steep and rise further in August.

  • Best value

    Leith

Down at the water with good food, cheaper rooms and a frequent bus in. The last bus back after a midnight show is a real consideration.

  • Quietest

    Glasgow

Fifty minutes by train and a fraction of the August rate, which is why many performers commute. The last train limits your late-night comedy plans.

Worth knowing before you book: Book by early spring or accept a commute. Most August lets demand a full week, and cancellation terms are far stricter than the rest of the year.
