Cozumel
Jacques Cousteau put Cozumel on the map in the 1960s and the visibility — routinely forty metres — still does the selling.

Why go
Away from the reef, Cozumel is a flat, scrubby island with one real town, San Miguel, where the seafront malecón fills with families at dusk and the cruise-ship crowds thin after five. Inland, the interior is mostly jungle with a scattering of Mayan ruins at San Gervasio, low-key compared with the mainland's big sites. The east coast, wilder and rockier, has empty beaches and real Caribbean swell rather than the calm found along the west.
Most visitors base themselves near San Miguel or the hotel zone north of town and treat diving as the main event, filling gaps with a beach club day or a jungle buggy tour. It works well as a stand-alone week or tagged onto time on the Riviera Maya, a short ferry ride away. Hurricane season, June to November, brings the odd washed-out day; winter is driest but busiest with cruise-ship traffic.

From our guides
The island's west coast is one long marine park where a gentle current carries you over Palancar's coral gardens, making drift diving feel like flying without effort. Beginners can shore-snorkel at Chankanaab or take a first dive with one of the many patient operators. Ferries cross from Playa del Carmen in forty-five minutes; check the cruise-ship schedule and pick a quiet day.

Things to do
-
Palancar Reef
A sprawling coral garden along the west coast, and the classic Cozumel drift dive, with visibility that regularly reaches forty metres.
-
Chankanaab National Park
A sheltered lagoon and reef area good for first-time snorkellers, with botanical gardens, a small aquarium and sea lion shows nearby.
-
San Gervasio ruins
A quiet Mayan site in the island's interior, once a pilgrimage centre dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, with several temple structures still standing.
-
Punta Sur
The island's southern tip, with a lighthouse, coastal lagoons and boat trips for spotting crocodiles among the mangroves.
-
East coast beaches
Wild, wind-battered stretches of sand facing open Caribbean swell, far quieter than the west side and largely free of development.
-
San Miguel malecón
The seafront promenade where island life resumes each evening once the cruise ships have sailed on, filling with joggers and families.

Dive hotels and guesthouses in town, plus all-inclusive resorts strung along the west coast and condo rentals. The east coast is undeveloped and has almost nothing.

Best base overall
San Miguel de Cozumel
The island's only town, where the ferry lands and most dive shops are based, so boats leave from your doorstep. The waterfront is loud on cruise-ship days.

Calm, shallow water and resort pools a short ride from town, which suits smaller swimmers. The reef swimming is better further south.

Worth knowing before you book: December to April is peak and dive packages sell out well ahead, while the hurricane season from August to October brings lower rates and real weather risk.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Cozumel has its own airport with direct flights from several US cities; otherwise fly into Cancún and take the ferry from Playa del Carmen.
- Crowds
- Cruise ships can bring several thousand passengers ashore at once, so it helps to check the port schedule before planning diving or town visits.
- Cash or card
- Cards are widely accepted in town, but smaller stalls and some dive shops prefer cash.
- Driving
- A hire car or golf buggy makes sense for exploring the east coast and Punta Sur, since buses are limited.
- Safety
- Currents on the east coast are strong, and swimming there should be limited to the few protected coves.
