Why go

Two curves of white sand sit either side of a vast natural arch worn through soft volcanic rock, backed by cliffs and pōhutukawa trees that flower scarlet at Christmas. The water is clear and part of a marine reserve, so the fish stay put and snorkelling is genuinely worthwhile. There is no road in; you arrive on foot along the clifftop from Hahei, or by boat and kayak from the beach.

The cove is a half-day rather than a destination in itself, so build it into a Coromandel loop from Auckland, staying at Hahei or Hot Water Beach for a couple of nights. December to March gives warm water and long evenings, and also the peak of New Zealand's own holiday season. Storm damage has affected access in recent years, so this is one to check before committing a day to it.

From our guides

The walk in takes about forty-five minutes from Hahei, or you can kayak round the marine reserve's coastline, which is the better day out. New Zealand summer — December to March — brings water warm enough to linger in.

Things to do

  1. The arch and Te Hoho Rock

The arch links the two beaches at low tide, with the sail-shaped Te Hoho Rock standing offshore. Time your visit around the tide to walk through it.

  2. Te Whanganui-A-Hei reserve

The marine reserve protects the whole stretch of coast, which means snapper and blue maomao a few metres from shore. Bring a mask and snorkel.

  3. Sea kayaking

Paddling in from Hahei takes you past caves, blowholes and stacks the walking track never sees, and lands you on the sand from the water. The better half-day.

  4. Hot Water Beach

Ten minutes south, geothermal springs seep up through the sand. Dig your own pool within two hours either side of low tide and mind the scalding patches.

  5. Hahei Beach

A wide, pink-tinged bay that serves as the base for the whole area, with safe swimming, a small village behind and the boat departures for the cove.

  6. Karangahake Gorge

On the drive in or out, an old gold-mining gorge with railway tunnels, swing bridges and a river walk. A good rainy-day alternative to the coast.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Auckland (AKL)

Nearest airport to Cathedral Cove, about 92km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Hahei

Claris (GBZ) is on Great Barrier Island and not a practical way in. Visitors drive from Auckland instead, about three hours around the Firth of Thames and over the Coromandel range to Hahei.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The walk in takes around forty-five minutes each way from the Hahei clifftop, with a park-and-ride shuttle in summer as the trailhead car park is closed to cars. Kayak and boat trips from Hahei beach are the better day out and avoid the walk.

Public transport: Almost none. A summer shuttle links Hahei with the trailhead, but reaching the peninsula at all really needs a car.

Good to know

Access
The walking track has been closed or restricted by storm damage in recent years. Check the Department of Conservation's current status before you plan the day.
The walk
From Hahei it is roughly 45 minutes each way, with steady climbs and steps. Not flat, and warmer than it looks in the middle of the day.
Tides
Low tide opens up both beaches and the arch itself. At high tide the sand largely disappears and the walk through is not possible.
No facilities
There is nothing to buy at the cove and no shade beyond the trees. Carry water, sun cream and anything you plan to eat.
Parking
Hahei's main car park sits back from the beach with a shuttle in summer. Arrive early in January or expect a long walk to the trailhead.
