The experience
Mountain streams above the northern end of the lake have cut limestone into narrow slots, chutes and plunge pools, and canyoning is the most direct way down them. A guide kits you out, checks the anchors and sets the pace; you slide, abseil, wade and occasionally jump, with cold water doing most of the talking. Sessions typically run half a day, and the walking in and out is part of the deal.
Riva del Garda and Torbole, at the head of the lake, are the natural base, and routes are graded so that families and hardened thrill-seekers can both be satisfied on the same morning. The season runs from late spring into early autumn, once meltwater has settled. Build the rest of the week around swimming, via ferrata, windsurfing and the ferries that stitch the shoreline villages together.

From our guides
Operators around Riva del Garda grade routes from family-gentle to properly wild, and every jump has a walk-around for the sensible. The debrief pizza by the lake tastes like victory.

Make a trip of it
-
Riva del Garda
The lake's northern town, hemmed in by cliffs, with a medieval tower to climb and a promenade that fills every evening. Most canyoning operators meet groups here.
-
Varone waterfall
A short drive inland, a river drops nearly 100 metres into a vertical gorge you walk into on galleries. A useful, dry preview of the rock the canyons cut through.
-
Ponale path
An old military road carved into the cliff above the western shore, now a walking and cycling route with the whole lake laid out below. Steady gradient, enormous views.
-
Arco
Fifteen minutes north, a rock-climbing town under a ruined castle on a limestone spike. Good for a rest day, and the place to buy anything you forgot.
-
Lake Ledro
A small, warmer lake in the hills above Riva, with swimming, a lakeside path and a museum built over Bronze Age pile dwellings found in the shallows.
-
Torbole and the Ora
The afternoon wind blows up the lake with clockwork reliability, which is why the sails appear daily around lunchtime. Worth watching even if you never get on a board.

Caselle (VRN)
Nearest airport to Lake Garda, about 34km away as the crow flies.

Then
To Riva del Garda
Around an hour and a half by car from Verona (VRN), north past the eastern shore of the lake to Riva del Garda. Buses run up from Verona and Rovereto if you would rather not drive.

Getting around
Operators meet you in or near Riva and drive the group to the canyon, usually a short hop into the mountains behind the lake. Kit is provided, and you need nothing but swimwear and trainers you do not mind soaking.
Public transport: Buses link Riva with Verona, Trento and the lake towns, and ferries connect the shore, so a car is optional.

Family-run hotels and residences, apartments, farm stays in the hills and some very large lakeside campsites. Chains are rare and most properties are independent.
-
Best base overall
Riva del Garda
The northern lake town where the canyoning operators, climbing shops and bike hire all are, with a proper old centre and a lakefront promenade. It is busy with active holidaymakers all summer.

Best value
Torbole
Riva's smaller neighbour, geared to windsurfers, with cheaper apartments and campsites a ten-minute walk round the bay. Fewer restaurants and less to do on a rainy evening.
Find stays in Torbole -
Best with children
Arco
Just inland under its castle rock, with lower prices, a good gelateria culture and several canyon routes on the doorstep. There is no lake shore, so swimming means a short bus ride.

Quietest
Tenno and the Valle di Ledro
Villages in the hills above the lake with a swimmable turquoise lake of their own and farmhouse accommodation. A car is essential and evenings are very quiet.

Worth knowing before you book: Canyons close after heavy rain, so book a route early in your stay to allow a second attempt. Northern Garda fills with German and Italian holidaymakers from June to September.

Good to know
- Season
- Descents generally run from May to September. Early season means higher, colder water and more committing routes; late summer is gentler.
- What to bring
- Wetsuit, helmet and harness come with the trip. You need a swimming costume, a towel and trainers you do not mind soaking.
- Fitness
- Confidence in water matters more than gym fitness, though there is usually a steep walk in and a walk out at the end.
- Jumps
- Every jump on a properly run route has a walk-around or a lower option. Say so at the start and no one will push you.
- Getting there
- Verona and Bergamo are the closest airports, both roughly 90 minutes by road. A hire car makes the mountain meeting points far easier.
