Berchtesgaden National Park
Germany's alpine showpiece is built for a confidence-building first trek: take the electric boat down the fjord-like Königssee to the red-domed chapel of St Bartholomä, then walk in beneath the Watzmann's kilometre-high east face.

Why go
Germany's only alpine national park is arranged around a narrow emerald lake walled by limestone, with the Watzmann's kilometre-high east face rising straight out of it. Electric boats have carried visitors down the Königssee since the 1900s, and the mountains behind open into a network of huts and passes that makes multi-day walking unusually approachable for beginners.
Three to five nights, easily reached from Salzburg less than an hour away. The high routes and huts run from roughly June to early October; winter turns the valley into a quieter place of sledging and snowshoes. The area also holds difficult twentieth-century history, addressed directly at the documentation centre on the Obersalzberg. Families do well here, as cable cars and boats replace much of the climbing.

From our guides
Huts such as the Kärlingerhaus above the eccentric Funtensee let you string together a superb two-to-three-day loop with escape routes everywhere. Book hut beds from May for the summer season, and pack a swimming costume for the lake — briefly.

Things to do
-
Königssee boat
Silent electric launches run the length of a lake so steep-sided it barely has a shore, stopping so the boatman can play a trumpet against the rock face.
-
St Bartholomä
A red-domed pilgrimage chapel on a peninsula halfway down the lake, with the Watzmann's east face directly behind. Boat access only.
-
Obersee and Röthbach falls
A short walk beyond the far landing stage reaches a second, smaller lake and Germany's highest waterfall. Reflections here are the reason to come early.
-
Funtensee and the Kärlingerhaus
A hut beside a karst lake in a high basin that regularly records Germany's lowest temperatures. The centrepiece of a two or three-day loop.
-
Jenner cable car
A modern gondola to 1,800 metres with a viewing platform over the lake and the Austrian Alps, and easy ridge walking from the top station.
-
Documentation Obersalzberg
A serious museum on the site of the Nazi leadership's mountain complex, with surviving bunker tunnels beneath. Sobering, well curated and worth the time.

Family-run gasthofe, alpine pensions and Ferienwohnungen, plus mountain huts inside the park for anyone walking multi-day routes. Very little international chain presence.

Best base overall
Berchtesgaden
The market town is the transport hub, with buses to the Konigssee and up towards the Kehlstein, plus supermarkets for hut provisions. It is busy with day trippers until late afternoon, then empties.

Schonau am Konigssee
Right at the boat jetty, so you catch the first electric boat before the coaches arrive. Prices reflect the location and the village goes very quiet out of season.

Ramsau
A farming village under the Hochkalter with the much-photographed church and river, and trailheads on the doorstep. You need a car or patience with the bus timetable.

Bischofswiesen
A few minutes down the valley towards Bad Reichenhall, with cheaper pensions and holiday flats and a station on the line. Less atmospheric, and dinner options are thin.

Worth knowing before you book: Hut beds for the summer open for reservation in spring and the popular ones go within days. Many valley guesthouses ask for at least three nights in July and August.

Good to know
- Book ahead
- Mountain hut beds are reserved from spring for the summer season and popular weekends go quickly. Bring a sleeping liner, which most huts require.
- Timing
- High routes are generally snow-free from late June to early October. Boats run year-round but with reduced winter timetables.
- Weather
- Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer and the limestone gets slippery fast. Start early and be off exposed ground by mid-afternoon.
- Swimming
- The Königssee and Obersee are glacially cold even in August. A swim is possible and very brief, and swimming is restricted in parts of the protected zone.
- Getting there
- Salzburg is the nearest airport, under an hour away, with regional bus and train connections. A local guest card usually includes free bus travel in the valley.
