Alton Towers

Rollercoasters plunge through wooded Staffordshire valleys around a ruined Gothic house at Alton Towers, leaving gardens and lakes between the high-thrill rides and family attractions. Staying for two days gives this sprawling park room to breathe, particularly if your group is balancing headline coasters with younger children or different height limits.

Why go

A theme park built around the ruins of a gothic stately home, with woodland, gardens and a lake between the rides rather than acres of tarmac. The coasters are the reason people come, and several rank among the better ones in Europe. The layout hides them in valleys, so the place feels calmer than its ride list suggests, and there is proper shade when the queues start to build.

Two days is the sensible shape, with a night on site and the water park or the gardens filling the gaps. The season runs from spring to early November, with a Halloween programme and fireworks weekends at the end of it. Term-time weekdays generally offer a better chance of shorter queues than school holidays, although ride availability and school calendars still matter. Families with only very small children may find better value elsewhere.

Gothic grounds, serious coasters

From our guides

Britain's biggest park hides world-class coasters — Nemesis, Wicker Man, The Smiler — in landscaped grounds around a genuinely gothic ruined stately home. CBeebies Land is the secret weapon for younger siblings, and the water park softens a two-day stay. The essential tactic: arrive at opening, head straight to the back of the park and work forwards against the crowd flow. Midweek in term time, queues all but vanish.

Things to do

  1. Nemesis Reborn

An inverted coaster carved into a rocky ravine, with your feet swinging free and the track rarely far from the ground. Its close-to-the-terrain layout makes the sense of speed particularly forceful.

  2. The Smiler

The world’s first rollercoaster with 14 loops, its dense knot of track is the park’s most visually disorientating challenge. Check live availability and queue times in the official app before choosing when to ride.

  3. Wicker Man

A wooden coaster built around a towering Wicker Man structure, with the train passing through its theatrical centrepiece three times. The timber track gives it a markedly different character from the park’s steel coasters.

  4. CBeebies Land

A dedicated area for younger children, with gentle rides, familiar characters and attractions applying their own height and adult-accompaniment rules.

  5. The gardens and ruins

Victorian gardens below the ruined house hold a conservatory, a pagoda fountain and long lawns, offering a leafy contrast to the busier ride areas.

  6. The water park

This indoor tropical pool complex sits near the resort hotels and can make a useful second-day activity, but it requires separate admission and advance booking. Families with children under eight should check the current supervision rules and dated opening information.

Getting there

    Nottingham, Leicestershire (EMA)

Nearest airport to Alton Towers, about 41km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Alton

About an hour by car from East Midlands (EMA), west across Derbyshire on the A50 and then country roads. Manchester and Birmingham are similar distances.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The park is hilly and spread out, with a monorail from the car parks and a cable car between areas. A car gives the most flexibility for reaching the rural resort, but a car-free visit is possible if the limited return buses are planned in advance.

Public transport: A car offers the most flexibility, but it is not essential. D&G’s limited 32A serves Alton Towers from Uttoxeter and Stoke-on-Trent, while the seasonal X80 runs from Derby via Uttoxeter. Compare the live operator timetable and final return with the park’s closing time before buying rail tickets.

Where to stay

  • Best base overall

    Alton and the resort itself

On-site hotels and lodges put you minutes from the gates. They can be expensive for what the rooms are, and the village outside has very little else, so compare the precise package inclusions with a room-only stay and the park tickets you need.

  • Best value

    Ashbourne

A handsome market town about twenty minutes away with pubs, inns and B&Bs at normal prices. You lose the early entry, and you drive in with the morning queue.

  • Best with children

    Uttoxeter

Fifteen minutes south, with budget chain hotels, supermarkets and family restaurants for a no-fuss overnight. Nothing scenic about it, but it is cheap and easy.

  • Closest to the sights

    Stoke-on-Trent

Half an hour west, with the widest hotel choice and the pottery museums for a second day. A city stay rather than a countryside one, and traffic slows the morning run.

Worth knowing before you book: Pre-book park tickets to secure entry and the current online price; walk-up admission costs more and may be unavailable on sold-out dates.
