Ahangama

Weligama's cooler neighbour has become Sri Lanka's surf-town sweet spot: reef and beach breaks for every level, stilt fishermen posing photogenically offshore and a strip of speciality-coffee cafés that would embarrass east London.

Why go

This is a stretch of coast rather than a town, running along the main road between paddy fields and a series of reef and beach breaks. Surf sets the timetable: dawn sessions, a long flat middle of the day spent under a fan or in a cafe, then a second go before dark. Palm groves back the sand, trains rattle past on the coastal line, and the sea is warm all year.

Two weeks passes easily here, though a week is enough if you pair it with the hill country. Galle's fort is half an hour west, Mirissa's whale boats a similar distance east, and the southern national parks are within a day's drive. The south coast season runs November to April, quietest at either end. Anyone wanting resort facilities or reliably calm swimming should look further along the coast.

From our guides

Rent a scooter and you can surf a different break every morning for a week. The south-coast season runs November to April; go early in that window for smaller crowds and greener paddies.

Things to do

  1. Beginner waves at Weligama

The long sandy bay a few minutes west takes complete beginners, with board hire and instructors spread along the whole beach.

  2. Kabalana and the Rock

A powerful reef break sits off Kabalana beach for confident surfers, with a friendlier sandbar working alongside it.

  3. Galle Fort

The Dutch walled town has ramparts to walk at sunset, colonial streets on a grid and a lighthouse on the corner, and it makes an easy half day.

  4. Stilt fishermen

The stilts still stand along this coast, though the men perched on them now largely pose for cameras. Agree a fee before you take photographs.

  5. The coastal train

Third class with the doors open between Galle and Matara is one of the cheapest good views in Asia, running just above the beach.

  6. Rice and curry

The local version arrives as a spread of small dishes around red rice, coconut sambol and dhal, and it is usually the best thing on any menu.

Public transport: The coastal railway from Colombo to Matara stops nearby and is slow, cheap and lovely; buses run constantly along the main road.
