Why go

Germany's highest summit at 2,962 metres is a rare thing: a genuinely high alpine peak you can reach in shirtsleeves before lunch. Two railways climb it, one boring through the mountain on a cogwheel line and one flying from a lakeside station on a single cable span that looks improbable from below. On top there are terraces, a glacier bowl behind and, on a clear day, several hundred peaks across four countries.

Base yourself in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, ninety minutes by train from Munich, and treat the mountain as one very good day. Ride up one way and down the other, allow time for the short secured path to the summit cross, and finish with a swim in the turquoise lake at the bottom. Views depend entirely on weather, so keep the day flexible. Winter turns the plateau into a small, high ski area.

From our guides

From the top, four hundred peaks in four countries on a clear day, plus a summit cross you can shuffle to along a short secured path. Do the classic loop: cogwheel train up through the mountain, cable car down — and leave time for a swim in absurdly turquoise Eibsee.

Things to do

  1. Cable car from Eibsee

A record-setting single span lifts you almost 2,000 vertical metres in under ten minutes, with the rock face sliding past the window.

  2. Summit cross

A short secured scramble from the terrace to the gilded cross on the true summit. Steel cables and a head for heights required.

  3. Eibsee lakeside loop

An easy seven-kilometre path round a lake of extraordinary turquoise beneath the north face. Swimming is cold, clear and entirely worth it.

  4. The Zugspitzplatt

The glacier bowl behind the summit, reached by a small cable car, with walking in summer and Germany's highest ski runs in winter.

  5. Cogwheel through the mountain

The Bavarian railway climbs from Garmisch through Grainau and then bores upward inside the rock for several kilometres. Take it one way for contrast.

  6. Partnach Gorge

Back in Garmisch, a walkway cut into a narrow gorge of waterfalls and spray. Spectacular when frozen in midwinter, and a good weather-hit fallback.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Innsbruck (INN)

Nearest airport to Zugspitze, about 32km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Garmisch-Partenkirchen

About an hour by car north from Innsbruck (INN) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Munich is a similar drive from the other side and has far more flights, with direct trains taking around an hour and a half.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

From Garmisch the cogwheel train climbs through the mountain to the summit and the cable car rises from Eibsee. The classic loop uses one in each direction.

Public transport: Very good. Trains reach Garmisch and Eibsee, and the summit itself is served by rack railway and cable car.

Where to stay

Gasthof inns, family hotels with half board, and holiday apartments, plus a few spa hotels in Garmisch. Both summit stations have places to eat but only one has beds.

  • Best base overall

    Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The town at the foot of the mountain, with the cogwheel railway station, plenty of hotels and the Partnach gorge for a second day. Two merged towns, so check which half you are in.

    Grainau

The village beside Lake Eibsee and the cable car base, so you can swim in turquoise water after coming down. Restaurants are few and it is quiet by nine.

  • Best value

    Ehrwald

Over the Austrian side, with its own cable car to the summit and rooms at noticeably lower rates. The pass and the ticketing differ, so check which side you are buying.

  • Quietest

    Mittenwald

Twenty minutes east, a painted violin-making village with good walking and far fewer coaches. You are driving or training in for the summit.

Worth knowing before you book: The combined railway and cable car ticket is the sensible buy, and clear days sell out the first departures. Check the weather webcams before committing, since cloud hides everything.

Good to know

Getting there
Regional trains from Munich reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen in around ninety minutes, and the mountain railway leaves from the same station area.
Timing
Go up on a clear morning, since cloud commonly builds by afternoon. Check the summit webcam before committing to the ticket price.
Layers
It can be 25°C at the lake and close to freezing on the summit, with strong wind. Take a warm jacket even in August.
Border
The summit straddles the German and Austrian frontier and an Austrian cable car arrives from Ehrwald. Carry ID if you plan to descend that side.
Crowds
Summer weekends and clear holiday days bring long queues at both valley stations. Arrive for the first departures or go midweek.
