Why go

A shelf of alpine meadow hangs high above the Lauterbrunnen valley, and the village sits on it with the Eiger's north wall filling the view. There are chalets, two or three streets, hay barns and a church tower. Days go on trails that contour along the slope or climb towards Männlichen, with a café at the turnaround and a train home when legs give out. Nothing here moves quickly.

Two seasons work properly. High summer brings wildflower meadows and long walking days; midwinter brings gentle skiing on the Kleine Scheidegg side and a village that stays lit and warm. Shoulder months can be damp and half closed. The rest of the Jungfrau region sits a short train ride away, so Grindelwald, Mürren and the high glacier world all fit a week without a car. Nightlife hunters should look elsewhere.

Slow, alpine, quietly old-fashioned

From our guides

Learning is sweeter with the Eiger watching: car-free Wengen has nursery slopes right in the village, and the long, gentle blues around Kleine Scheidegg let new skiers rack up confident miles beneath the most famous mountain wall in Europe. Everything arrives by cog railway, which sets the unhurried tone. The British have learned to ski here since the 1920s, so English-language instruction is a given. January weeks are quietest — bar the rowdy Lauberhorn race weekend mid-month.

Things to do

  1. Panorama trail to Kleine Scheidegg

A near level path along the mountainside with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau lined up ahead the whole way. Roughly two hours, and easy enough for most families.

  2. Männlichen ridge walk

Take the cable car up from Wengen and follow the broad ridge round to Kleine Scheidegg. Big views on both sides and a railway station at each end.

  3. Jungfraujoch by railway

Europe's highest railway station sits at 3,454 metres, inside the mountain, with ice tunnels and a glacier plateau outside. Expensive, cold and genuinely unlike anywhere else.

  4. Lauterbrunnen valley waterfalls

Down in the valley, Staubbach drops nearly 300 metres off the cliff and the Trümmelbach falls thunder inside the rock. An easy half day from the village.

  5. Lauberhorn race weekend

The longest downhill on the World Cup circuit runs straight past the village each January. Cowbells, brass bands and a village at four times its usual population.

  6. Wengernalp meadows

One stop up the line, a scatter of farm buildings on open pasture beneath the Jungfrau. Walk down from here for the classic descent back into the village.

    Getting around

Wengen is car free and small enough to cross on foot. The cog railway and cable cars take you up to Kleine Scheidegg, the slopes and the Jungfraujoch.

Worth knowing before you book: The Lauberhorn race weekend in January fills every bed in the valley at a premium, so avoid it or book far ahead. Check how far the hotel is from the station.

Good to know

Getting there
Trains from Interlaken Ost run to Lauterbrunnen, where you change to the cog railway. The whole journey from Zurich or Geneva airport is straightforward and signposted.
No cars
The village is car free, so leave vehicles in the multi-storey at Lauterbrunnen. Pack light and use the small hand carts at the station for luggage.
Timing
Late June to September gives snow-free high trails; ski season runs roughly from Christmas to early April. May and November are quiet in the wrong way.
Travel passes
Regional and national rail passes cut the cost of mountain railways considerably, which matters when a single high-altitude return can cost more than a night's stay.
Layers
It can be shirtsleeves in the village and close to freezing at the top of the railway on the same afternoon. Carry a warm layer and sunglasses year round.
