Why go
The Bukit is the limestone plateau hanging off Bali's southern tip, dry and scrubby on top and cut by cliffs some seventy metres above the Indian Ocean. Coves are reached down long flights of steps, the surf peels left along the reef, and clifftop warungs fill for the evening. It feels detached from the rest of the island: fewer rice fields, more wind, harder light.
Base yourself in Bingin, Pecatu or Uluwatu itself rather than driving down each day from Seminyak, because the road is slow. The dry season, May to September, brings the classic swell and the cleanest sunsets, while the wet months are quieter and cheaper. Three or four nights here pairs neatly with Ubud inland. Families with toddlers will find the cliff staircases hard work.

From our guides
A sea temple balanced on a seventy-metre cliff, waves detonating below, and a sky that runs through every shade of mango — Uluwatu is sunset as theatre, complete with an actual show: the kecak fire dance performed nightly in the clifftop amphitheatre. Propose on the quieter cliff path before the chanting begins, then let a hundred voices soundtrack the celebration.

Things to do
-
Pura Luhur Uluwatu
A sea temple on the cliff edge that holds a nightly kecak fire dance in an open amphitheatre timed to sunset. Watch the macaques, who take glasses.
-
Padang Padang
A small cove entered through a gap in the rock, with a right-hand wave outside that is considerably friendlier than the main Uluwatu break.
-
Bingin
A steep staircase drops to a strip of sand that vanishes at high tide, with a reef break offshore and simple warungs stacked up the cliff.
-
Nyang Nyang and Green Bowl
Two of the emptier beaches on the plateau, both reached by long stairways, and both usually close to deserted on a weekday.
-
Melasti Beach
A newer road cuts down through white limestone walls to a wide bay, one of the few Bukit beaches you can reach without a long climb.
-
Sunset from the cliffs
The western edge of the peninsula faces straight into the sunset, and the terraces above the surf breaks are the fixed ritual end to the day.

Getting around
The breaks and the temple are strung along the clifftops, so a scooter or a driver is how people move between Bingin, Padang Padang and Uluwatu. Steep steps lead down to each beach.
Public transport: Nothing worth planning around. Scooters and ride hailing are the local transport.

Where to stay
Surf bungalows and hostels on the cliffs, mid-range villas along the ridge, and a small number of large clifftop resorts. Almost nothing sits directly on the sand.
-
Best base overall
Bingin
Clifftop warungs and cheap rooms above a beach with a friendlier wave than Uluwatu, with Padang Padang and Dreamland close by. Everything involves steps, plenty of them.

Closest to the sights
Pecatu
The village nearest the temple and the main break, with a spread of guesthouses and villas along the ridge. You will want a scooter, since it is spread out.
Find stays in Pecatu -
Best with children
Jimbaran
A calm bay on the other side of the peninsula with gentle water, seafood grills on the sand and easy airport access. The surf scene is twenty minutes away.
Find stays in Jimbaran -
Quietest
Balangan
A low-key strip of bamboo bungalows above a long beach, cheaper and calmer than Bingin. Food choice is thin and the road in is rough in places.

Worth knowing before you book: Dry season, roughly May to September, is both the swell season and the busiest, so book cliffside rooms early. Check whether the price includes airport transfers, as taxis are dear.

Good to know
- Getting there
- The airport is only about fifteen kilometres away, but the road can take an hour. Arrange a transfer rather than negotiating on arrival.
- Tides
- Several beaches disappear at high tide and the reef turns shallow and sharp. Check a tide table before walking down the steps.
- Etiquette
- A sarong is required at the temple and is lent at the gate. Keep sunglasses, hats and phones out of reach of the monkeys.
- Surfing
- The main break is for experienced surfers only, over shallow reef. Beginners should learn on the sand-bottom beaches further north.
- Cash
- Warungs on the cliff and beach parking attendants often want cash, and machines are thin on the ground away from the main road.
