Tropical Islands Resort
An hour south of Berlin, inside a former airship hangar large enough to contain the Eiffel Tower lying down, sits a permanently 26-degree indoor tropics: a rainforest with real flamingos, a lagoon, Germany's tallest waterslide tower and a beach with an artificial sunset.

Why go
The hangar was built to make airships and never did, which left a steel dome tall enough to hold a rainforest, a lagoon and a waterslide tower under one roof, an hour south of Berlin. Inside it stays at around 26°C all year. There is a sand beach with a painted sky, a spa zone, an evening light show on the dome and outdoor pools that open in summer.
Most families come for one or two nights, because sleeping inside, in a tent or a themed room, is the part children remember. It works year-round and earns its keep in the flat grey Brandenburg winter. Combine it with a few days in Berlin, and know that at German school holidays and half terms the slides queue and the indoor beach fills early.

From our guides
The surreal masterstroke is staying overnight — you can sleep in tents on the indoor beach — which turns a wet-weather backup into the strangest, best night of the trip.

Things to do
-
The dome itself
The former airship hangar is one of the largest free-standing halls in the world, and the first walk through the doors is genuinely the point of the place.
-
Rainforest walk
A planted tropical garden of thousands of species winds through the middle of the hall, with flamingos, koi and a canopy walkway along the way.
-
Waterslide tower
The tallest slide tower in Germany stands at one end of the hall, with runs from gentle family rafts to steep enclosed drops.
-
Sleeping on the beach
Tents and small cabins are pitched on the indoor sand, so children can swim late and wake up inside the dome with the lights coming up.
-
Amazonia sauna area
An adults-oriented sauna and pool zone sits apart from the family side, which is what makes a long day here bearable for parents.
-
Outdoor lagoon
In summer an outdoor pool and slide area opens on the grass beside the hangar, useful when the interior gets busy at the weekend.

Worth knowing before you book: Overnight guests get early and late access to the pools, which is what you are paying for. German school holidays and wet weekends sell out far in advance.

Good to know
- Getting there
- It is around an hour from Berlin by car, and regional trains from the city reach Brand station with a shuttle bus to the door.
- Book ahead
- Overnight stays and school holiday days sell out. Weekdays outside German holidays are far calmer and cheaper.
- Pack this
- Bring your own towels and flip-flops, and swim shoes for children. Lockers work on a deposit system.
- Timing
- Arrive at opening or stay overnight. The busiest stretch runs from late morning to mid-afternoon, when the slide queues build.
- Food
- Catering inside is functional rather than exciting. A proper breakfast before you arrive saves both money and queuing.
