Why go

A working port city built up a hillside, with Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman layers still standing among the concrete blocks that replaced the old town after the fire of 1917. The waterfront promenade runs for kilometres past the White Tower, the upper town keeps its walls and wooden houses, and the whole place eats and drinks with unusual seriousness. Nothing is polished and very little closes early.

Three nights covers the city, its markets and its museums with time left for a beach or a day trip. Vergina's royal tombs, Mount Olympus and the Halkidiki peninsulas are all within reach, and Meteora makes a long day or a better overnight. The centre is walkable and a metro finally opened in late 2024. Summer is hot and the students leave, so the nightlife is best from autumn to spring.

From our guides

Rooftop bars face the bay, tsipouro arrives with meze by default and dancing starts embarrassingly late. It's the Greek night out as Greeks actually live it — no islands, no crowds, no compromise.

Things to do

  1. Ano Poli

The upper town survived the fire, so its lanes, Ottoman houses and Byzantine churches remain. Walk up through it to the walls and the Heptapyrgion for the view.

  2. The Rotunda and Arch of Galerius

A colossal fourth-century Roman rotunda that has served as temple, church and mosque, with a triumphal arch standing a few steps away in the middle of the street.

  3. Modiano and Kapani markets

Two markets side by side, one restored and covered, selling fish, olives and cheese by day and turning into eating and drinking territory later on.

  4. Valaoritou and Ladadika

The going-out districts, one a converted warehouse quarter and the other a grid of restored nineteenth-century buildings. Both run on weeknights, not just weekends.

  5. Museum of Byzantine Culture

An award-winning collection covering the city's thousand years as the empire's second city, and a useful primer before you go looking at the churches.

  6. Bougatsa for breakfast

Filo pastry filled with semolina custard or cheese, cut up with scissors and eaten standing. The city treats it as a civic institution.

  • Best base overall

    Ladadika

Restored warehouse streets between the port and the centre, dense with tavernas and bars and walkable to everything. It is noisy at night, which is rather the point here.

  • Best for nightlife

    Valaoritou

The student bar district proper, humming every night of the week in old arcades and workshops. Sleep is optional, so it suits one kind of traveller only.

  • Quietest

    Ano Poli, the Upper Town

Ottoman lanes and Byzantine walls above the city, with views over the bay and small guesthouses. It is a steep climb home and the buses stop early.

The Nea Paralia seafront and Kalamaria

The long new promenade and the calmer suburb beyond it, with apartments, parks and space to run. Further from the old centre, so plan on buses or a long walk.

Worth knowing before you book: The trade fair in September and the film festival in November fill the city and lift rates. Ask for an interior room anywhere near Valaoritou if you intend to sleep.

Good to know

Timing
The nightlife runs on the student calendar, so autumn to spring is liveliest. August empties the city and the heat pushes everything onto the waterfront.
Eating late
Dinner rarely starts before nine and bars fill after midnight. Adjust the day accordingly, with a long lunch and a late afternoon pause.
Getting there
Flights land at Makedonia airport, about 15 kilometres out, with frequent city buses into the centre. Trains connect to Athens in roughly four hours.
Cash or card
Cards are widely taken, but market stalls, kiosks and older tavernas prefer cash. Keep small notes for koulouri and coffee.
Day trips
Vergina, Pella and Mount Olympus all work as day trips by car or coach. Halkidiki's beaches are an hour or two away and very busy in August.
