Why go

Warm mineral water is the entire point here, pumped from springs into a sprawl of outdoor and indoor pools on the flat Sava plain near the Croatian border. The outdoor side runs slides, wave machines, slow current rivers and shallow play areas; the covered thermal riviera keeps the same idea going through winter under glass. This is a resort rather than a town, built around the water and the accommodation beside it.

Three or four nights is plenty, and the location makes a good stop between Ljubljana and Zagreb rather than a destination in its own right. Summer is busiest and hottest; winter has its own appeal, swimming outdoors in the steam. Prices sit well below western European equivalents. Couples after quiet, and adults without children, will find the atmosphere firmly family-shaped.

From our guides

Families stay in the on-site apartments, mobile homes or an actual Indian village of teepees. Prices are a fraction of western Europe's, and Zagreb airport is only forty minutes away.

Things to do

  1. The summer thermal riviera

A dozen or so outdoor pools fed by warm springs, with wave pools, slides and shallow lagoons spread across lawns and small islands.

  2. Winter thermal riviera

The indoor complex keeps pools, slides and current channels running under glass roofs from autumn to spring, which is what makes the resort year-round.

  3. Sleeping in a teepee

Alongside apartments and mobile homes, the resort has a village of teepees, which children tend to treat as the main attraction regardless of the pools.

  4. Mokrice Castle grounds

A short drive away, a castle with parkland and a golf course attached, useful for a change of scene and an easy walk.

  5. Posavje wine hills

The surrounding countryside grows the light red cvicek, and the slopes above the Sava are dotted with small cellars and vineyard cottages.

  6. Kostanjevica na Krki

A tiny town on a river island nearby, with a former Cistercian monastery housing a gallery and an open-air sculpture park.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Velika Gorica (ZAG)

Nearest airport to Terme Čatež, about 38km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Čatež ob Savi

Around 45 minutes to an hour by car from Zagreb (ZAG), west across the Croatian border and along the Sava valley. Ljubljana airport is a comparable drive from the other direction if fares suit better.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The resort is self-contained: accommodation, pools and restaurants all sit on the one site, so you park once and walk. Brežice and the Posavje wine country are a short drive away.

Public transport: Trains and buses reach nearby Brežice, but the last stretch to the resort really wants a car or taxi.

  • Best base overall

    Čatež ob Savi

The resort village itself, so the pools are a walk from your door in a dressing gown and the thermal entry is usually bundled in. There is very little else here.

  • Best with children

    The on-site holiday village

Apartments, mobile homes and the teepee camp inside the grounds, with play areas and the water park in reach. Cheerful rather than smart, and noisy in August.

  • Best value

    Brežice

The nearest proper town, a few minutes away, with ordinary guesthouses, a castle and restaurants at local prices. You will drive or bus in each morning and pay separately for the pools.

  • Quietest

Kostanjevica na Krki or the Gorjanci foothills

Farm stays and small tourist farms in the countryside east of the resort, all vineyards and quiet lanes. Lovely, but a car is not optional.

Worth knowing before you book: Booking the resort's own accommodation almost always includes pool entry, which day visitors pay for. School holidays in Slovenia and Croatia fill it completely.

Good to know

Getting there
Zagreb airport is around forty minutes away and Ljubljana about an hour, which makes a hire car the simplest way to arrive.
Book ahead
Slovenian and Croatian school holidays fill the resort. Reserve well in advance for July, August and the Christmas period.
Pack this
Swimming caps are required in some indoor pools, and goggles, armbands and flip-flops are worth bringing rather than buying on site.
With kids
Height limits apply on the larger slides, and the shallow play areas sit apart from the deeper pools, which makes supervision easier.
Cash or card
Slovenia uses the euro and cards work throughout the resort. A little cash helps at village shops and wine cellars.
