The experience
The walk starts in the dark, usually with a pickup around two in the morning, and climbs volcanic scree and loose ash for roughly two hours to a rim at 1,717 metres. Torchlight, a line of head-torches ahead, then the sky turning over the caldera lake with Mount Agung in silhouette behind. It is steep rather than technical, and guides set a pace most reasonably fit walkers can hold.
Batur sits in the Kintamani highlands, about two hours from Ubud and considerably longer from the southern beaches, so an Ubud base makes the alarm far less brutal. Guides are required and arranged in advance. The dry season, April to October, gives the best odds of a clear dawn, though cloud is always possible. Plan a slow afternoon afterwards, ideally at the hot springs by the lake.

- Dark, steep, worth the alarm
From our guides
Guides set a patient pace and breakfast is cooked in steam vents at the crater rim. Any reasonably active person makes the top. The monkeys at the summit have their own agenda; guard the toast.

Make a trip of it
-
Dawn over the caldera
The sun comes up behind Mount Abang and Agung, with the crater lake below and cloud usually sitting in the valleys. It lasts about twenty minutes.
-
Eggs cooked in steam vents
Guides use the volcano's own heat to cook breakfast at the rim, boiling eggs and steaming bananas in the fumaroles. Simple, and a fair bit of theatre.
-
The crater rim walk
Beyond the main viewpoint, a path traces the rim past older vents and lava fields. Ask for the longer route if you want more than the sunrise.
-
Hot springs by the lake
Terraced thermal pools on the shore of Lake Batur, looking back at the mountain you have just climbed. The obvious way to spend the rest of the morning.
-
Kintamani coffee stop
The highland villages around the caldera grow arabica and the local citrus. Roadside plantations offer tastings on the drive back down to Ubud.

Getting around
Treks start at Toya Bungkah at the foot of the volcano, roughly an hour and a half from Ubud, and the 2am transfer, guide and torches come as a package.
Public transport: Effectively none in the highlands, so it is a hired driver, a scooter or the trek transfer.

Best base overall
Ubud
Most Batur treks collect from here between one and two in the morning, and it is the best place to spend the rest of the day. The drive up takes about an hour and a half.

Worth knowing before you book: Treks depart in the small hours, so tell your hotel the night before or you will find the gate locked, and the wet months can cancel the sunrise entirely.

Good to know
- Book ahead
- Local guides are mandatory on the mountain and the arrangement is well established. Arrange through your accommodation a day or two in advance.
- Pack this
- A fleece or jacket, since the summit is cold and windy before dawn, plus trainers with grip for loose ash and a head torch of your own as backup.
- Fitness
- No technical skill needed, but it is a sustained steep climb on unstable ground for around two hours. Anyone with knee trouble will feel the descent.
- Monkeys
- The macaques at the summit are practised thieves and go straight for food and sunglasses. Keep breakfast in a closed bag until you sit down.
- Timing
- The dry season from April to October offers the clearest skies. Even then, cloud can hide the sunrise, so treat the view as a bonus.
