Why go
Two cable-car stages lift you from Praia Vermelha to Morro da Urca and then onto the bare granite dome that closes Guanabara Bay. The ride takes minutes, but most people stay far longer, moving around the summit as the light shifts over Copacabana, Botafogo and the distant outstretched arms of Christ the Redeemer. Marmosets patrol the railings and are considerably bolder than they look.
Late afternoon is the best slot, since one ticket covers daylight, sunset and the first city lights, but it is also the busiest, so buy in advance and arrive before the queue builds. A clear day matters more than the season. Fit walkers can take the trail up the first hill and ride only the second stage. The beaches and Corcovado fill the rest of a long weekend.

From our guides
It's the best urban mountain ride on earth. Time it for late afternoon: you get daylight, sunset behind Corcovado and the city lighting up, all on one ticket. Keep a firm grip on phones near the marmosets.

Things to do
-
The two-stage cable car
Glass cabins running since 1912, rebuilt several times, hopping first to Morro da Urca and then across to the summit. The second span is the dramatic one.
-
Sunset from the summit
The sun drops behind Corcovado and the Tijuca forest while the city lights come up below. Arrive at least an hour before, because everyone else has the same plan.
-
Morro da Urca trail
A steep but short forest path climbs the first hill from the base, taking around forty minutes. You then only pay for the upper cable-car stage.
-
Praia Vermelha
A small, sheltered beach of coarse red sand at the foot of the cable car, calm enough for swimming and framed by the two granite domes above.
-
Claudio Coutinho track
A paved seaside path around the base of the mountain, easy and shaded, with marmosets, birds and views out to the open Atlantic.
-
Climbing the granite
The dome carries long-established rock climbing routes, some of the oldest in Brazil, taken with local guides. Even watching from the base is entertaining.

Public transport: The metro covers the south zone well and buses reach Urca, though ride-hailing is what most visitors use, especially after dark.

Where to stay
Beachfront hotels along Copacabana, apartments and small pousadas elsewhere, plus hostels. Sea-view rooms carry a large premium and street-facing rooms carry the noise.
-
Best base overall
Urca
The small, safe residential neighbourhood at the foot of the cable car, with the mureta seawall for a beer at sunset. Only a handful of places to stay, so book early.

Copacabana
The largest concentration of hotels in the city, on the beach and ten minutes from the cable car, with the whole price range represented. Busy, uneven and best navigated by metro.

Ipanema and Leblon
Calmer, cleaner beaches and better restaurants, with the lagoon behind for cycling. Further from Sugarloaf and the most expensive part of the city to sleep in.

Botafogo
Between Urca and the centre, with bars, small music venues and a young crowd, plus the metro. Cheaper than the beach districts and the nearest lively base to the cable car.

Good to know
- Timing
- Late afternoon gives daylight, sunset and night views on one ticket. Mornings are quieter and often clearer if photography matters more than atmosphere.
- Book ahead
- Buy timed tickets online in advance, particularly for the sunset slots, which sell out in high season and around holidays.
- Weather
- Check visibility before committing. Low cloud removes the view entirely, and the mountain is not worth the money on a grey day.
- Wildlife
- The marmosets at the top will take food from bags and hands. Do not feed them, and keep phones and snacks out of reach.
- Safety
- Keep phones out of sight on the walk to and from Praia Vermelha, and use a taxi or ride app after dark rather than walking back through Urca.
