Why go

Söll is a village in the Tyrolean Wilder Kaiser region and part of the SkiWelt, one of the largest linked ski areas in Austria. A gondola lifts skiers straight from the edge of the village to Hochsöll, a broad plateau of gentle, wide runs at altitude rather than a nursery slope beside a car park. The village below is small, traditional and known for an après-ski scene of some intensity.

It suits beginners and improvers best, with hundreds of kilometres of connected, mostly easy and intermediate pisting reachable on skis. Salzburg, Innsbruck and Munich are all within a couple of hours, which keeps transfers short. Snow cover at this altitude relies heavily on snowmaking, so January and February are the safer months. Strong skiers will exhaust the terrain quickly, and light sleepers should check what sits below their window.

From our guides

Austrian ski schools are famously patient and drilled. Après-ski here is legendary, which is either a warning or a selling point. The night-skiing sessions are a fun, low-pressure way to squeeze in practice.

Things to do

  1. Hochsöll plateau

The gondola-served area above the village, with wide gentle runs and mountain restaurants, ideal for early days on skis.

  2. The SkiWelt circuit

Linked lifts connect the village with Ellmau, Scheffau, Going and Brixen, so a full day can be spent travelling between them.

  3. Hohe Salve

  4. Night skiing

Floodlit sessions on the Hochsöll slopes run on set evenings, a relaxed way to add practice to the day.

  5. Ski schools

Austrian ski schools here are well drilled and used to complete beginners, with group lessons in English widely available.

  6. Kufstein

A fortress town twenty minutes away, worth an afternoon off the slopes, with a castle standing above the Inn river.

Where to stay

Family-run Gasthöfe and pensions, mid-sized village hotels and holiday apartments, most on half board in winter. No chains and nothing resembling a purpose-built resort.

  • Best base overall

    Söll

The village sits at the gondola, so ski school, lifts and the evening bars are all within walking distance. Some hotels are a bus ride out along the valley road, so check before booking.

    Ellmau

The next SkiWelt village east, calmer in the evening, with gentle nursery slopes and a good swimming pool. Families choose it precisely because the après is tamer.

  • Quietest

    Scheffau

The smallest of the linked villages, with a fast gondola and very little happening after dinner. Best if the skiing is the holiday and the nightlife is not.

    Hopfgarten

A working market town at the western end of the ski area, with cheaper pensions and a market of its own. Buses and a local train, but the lift is not on the doorstep.

Worth knowing before you book: Austrian ski weeks run Saturday to Saturday, with most hotels refusing shorter stays in February half term, and the village's low altitude makes early January snow a gamble.

Good to know

Getting there
Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich all serve the area, with transfers of roughly one to two hours. Trains reach Wörgl and Kufstein nearby.
Snow
The area is relatively low, so cover depends on snowmaking. Book January or February rather than the end of the season.
Après-ski
The bars at the bottom of the gondola start early and get loud. Choose accommodation accordingly if you want quiet evenings.
Lift pass
The SkiWelt pass covers all the linked villages. A wider regional pass is worth it only if you plan to travel further.
Ski level
Terrain is mostly gentle. Confident skiers wanting steep or off-piste ground should consider elsewhere in the Tyrol.
