Below the village of Saturnia, a sulphurous river drops over a staircase of travertine terraces beside an old mill, each shallow basin holding water at roughly 37.5°C whatever the season. You claim a tier, wedge yourself under a small waterfall and let the flow work on your shoulders. The mineral content turns the rock white and the water milky blue. Access is free, unfenced and possible at any hour of the day or night.

There is no ticket, no timetable and no staff, which is both the appeal and the catch: no lockers, no supervision and limited parking. Winter mornings are the connoisseur's slot, with steam lifting off the pools and frost on the fields around them. Summer weekends bring crowds up from the coast. Build it into a couple of nights in the Maremma, with tufa villages and Etruscan sites close by.

The lower terraces

The basins furthest from the mill are usually quieter and slightly cooler, with a strong current running through the narrow channels.
Dawn and dusk

First light and after dark are when the pools thin out. Take a torch, since there is no lighting on the path down.
Winter steam

Cold air makes the whole cascade smoke. December to February is the finest season, and the water temperature never changes.
Montemerano

A walled hill village ten minutes away, and a good place to eat once you have soaked and showered off the sulphur.
Pitigliano

A tufa-cliff town half an hour south, with sunken Etruscan roads nearby and a former Jewish quarter cut into the rock.

Getting around

The falls are a couple of kilometres below Saturnia village on the road towards Montemerano, with a free car park beside them and a short walk down to the pools.

Public transport: Buses reach Saturnia village from Grosseto, but nothing useful serves the falls, least of all at the dawn and small hours that make them worth it.

Good to know

Free access: There is no entrance fee and no opening time, but also no lockers or lifeguard. Do not leave anything valuable in the car.
Jewellery: Sulphur turns silver black within minutes and the smell lingers on swimwear. Leave both at home if you care about them.
Footing: Travertine is slippery and the current is stronger than it looks. Water shoes and a slow approach are both sensible.
Parking: The small car park fills quickly at weekends and in the middle of the day. Arriving early or late solves most problems.
Health: Sulphur water at body temperature can leave people light-headed. Limit your time in, and drink water between soaks.
