Why go
One of the seven walled towns founded by German settlers in medieval Transylvania, Sibiu keeps two linked squares, a stretch of defensive wall and a set of steep passages connecting an upper town to a lower one. The famous detail is the roofline: narrow attic vents set into the tiles like half-closed eyes. It is a student city as well as a museum piece, so the squares stay busy well into the evening.
Two or three nights suits the town, with the Făgăraș mountains and the fortified Saxon villages within an easy drive. It served as European Capital of Culture in 2007 and still runs a large international theatre festival each June. Winter brings a Christmas market and cold, clear air, while summer is warm and lively. Prices remain low by Western European standards, which does no harm.

From our guides
Sibiu's pastel old town is Habsburg-handsome, lively with students and remarkably cheap for its looks. Cross the Bridge of Lies at dusk — legend says it creaks under fibbers — then eat slow-cooked pork and local Fetească in a cellar restaurant. June's international theatre festival fills the squares with performers.

Piața Mare and Piața Mică
The two connected squares at the centre, lined with Baroque and Saxon facades and used for markets, concerts and festivals.
-
The Bridge of Lies
A small cast-iron footbridge from 1859 between the two squares, with a legend that it creaks when someone tells an untruth on it.

-
Brukenthal Museum
One of the oldest public art collections in this part of Europe, housed in the Baroque palace of a former Habsburg governor.
-
Astra open-air museum
A large ethnographic park south of the city with relocated wooden houses, mills and churches gathered from across Romania.

- Cash or card
- Cards are accepted widely, but keep some local currency for markets and village stops. Romania does not use the euro.
- Timing
- June brings the theatre festival and full hotels. December has the Christmas market; January and February are cold and quiet.
