Why go

On the Ligurian coast east of Genoa, Sestri Levante occupies a small peninsula with a bay on either side: the sheltered Baia del Silenzio, ringed by tall pastel houses, and the wider Baia delle Favole facing open sea. The old town runs along the neck between them, essentially one lane of shops, churches and focaccia counters. This is a working Italian seaside town rather than a purpose-built resort.

It sits on the main coastal railway, so the Cinque Terre and the Portofino peninsula are both easy day trips without a car, and Genoa is under an hour away. Two or three nights is enough, more if you want proper beach days. Summer fills with Italian families, while late spring and September bring warm sea and space. Much of the sand is run as paid concessions, which surprises some visitors.

From our guides

Its Baia del Silenzio — the Bay of Silence — is a perfect curve of sand ringed by peeling ochre houses, calm as a pool in the morning. Swim before breakfast, eat focaccia on the seawall, and take the train to the famous villages if you must. You probably won't bother twice.

Things to do

  1. Baia del Silenzio

A tight curve of sand enclosed by houses, calm enough to swim in before breakfast. Fishing boats still pull up at the far end.

  2. Baia delle Favole

The larger bay, named for Hans Christian Andersen, who stayed here in 1833. Wider, breezier and better for a long walk.

  3. The peninsula walk

A path around the wooded headland past a former convent, with views back over both bays and along the coast.

  4. Focaccia

Ligurian focaccia, dimpled and oily, is eaten at any hour of the day. The cheese-filled version from nearby Recco is worth seeking out.

  5. Cinque Terre

The five cliff villages lie around 40 minutes north by train, best visited early or late to avoid the middle-of-day crush.

  6. Portofino and Camogli

West along the coast, reachable by train and boat, with a headland park and coastal paths above the sea at San Fruttuoso.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Genova (GOA)

Nearest airport to Sestri Levante, about 47km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Sestri Levante

About an hour by car from Genoa (GOA) on the A12 coastal motorway, or take a bus or taxi to Genova Brignole and a regional train down the Riviera in much the same time.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The old town, the Baia del Silenzio and both beaches are a few minutes' walk from the station, and coastal trains reach the Cinque Terre in under an hour.

Public transport: Very good: the town sits on the main Genoa to La Spezia line with frequent regional services.

Where to stay

Family-run three-star hotels along the seafront, a few grand old villas and a good supply of holiday apartments. Almost no chains and no large resorts.

  • Best base overall

    Sestri Levante

Stay on the isthmus itself, between the Baia del Silenzio and the bigger Baia delle Favole, so both beaches and the station are minutes away. Central rooms can be noisy on summer evenings.

  • Best value

    Riva Trigoso

The next bay south, a working village with a shipyard, a long sandy beach and cheaper rooms. Two minutes on the train, and far fewer visitors than the postcard side of town.

    Find stays in Riva Trigoso
  • Quietest

    Moneglia

A smaller seaside village along the coast, reached by train or the one-way tunnels, with a shingle beach and a slower pace. Less to do in the evening, which is rather the point.

  • Best with children

    Lavagna

Ten minutes up the line, with Liguria's longest sandy beach, plenty of equipped lidos and flat, pram-friendly streets. Plainer than Sestri but easier with small children in tow.

Worth knowing before you book: August is booked out by Italian families, often with half board compulsory and a minimum stay of a week, so aim for June or September instead.

Good to know

Getting there
The town is on the Genoa to La Spezia railway, with regional trains stopping frequently. Genoa airport is closest, Pisa a longer alternative.
Beach clubs
Most of the sand is divided into paid concessions with loungers. Free sections exist but are small and fill up early.
Parking
Streets are tight and summer parking is genuinely difficult. Arriving by train avoids the worst of it entirely.
Timing
Italian holidays in August fill the beaches. June and September give warm water and far more room to spread out.
Day trips
Buy Cinque Terre train tickets in advance in summer, and travel outside the late-morning peak if you can.
