San Juan del Sur
Nicaragua's surf hub curls around a horseshoe bay watched over by a clifftop Christ statue, but the waves are out of town: shuttles bounce daily to Playa Maderas, where a forgiving beach break and a taco shack cover most human needs.

Why go
The town is small, scruffy and built around fishing and surfing in roughly equal measure, with a wide bay that is good for sunsets and swimming but not for waves. Days follow a pattern: out to a beach in the morning, back for a late lunch, then an evening on the seafront. Nicaragua's tourism is still thin on the ground, which is much of the appeal. Nothing here is polished.
Give it four or five nights and combine it with Granada's colonial streets, the volcanoes around Leon and Ometepe island in Lake Nicaragua, all a few hours away. Managua and Liberia in Costa Rica are the usual airports. November to April is dry and reliably sunny, while the wet season brings bigger swell and greener hills. Check current travel advice before booking, as guidance changes.

From our guides
In town it's fish dinners, cold Toñas and sunsets from the malecón. Prices undercut Costa Rica, an hour south, by a comfortable margin. The dry season, November to April, brings offshore mornings; swell peaks mid-year.

Things to do
-
Playa Hermosa
A long, empty stretch of grey sand north of town reached down a dirt road, with a beach break and plenty of space. A day charge applies at the access point.
-
Playa Remanso
The closest surf beach to town and the calmest, with a gentle break used by most first-time lessons and rock pools at either end.
-
Cristo de la Misericordia
The hilltop statue above the bay is reached by a steep track and a flight of steps, with the whole horseshoe laid out below. Go late in the day.
-
La Flor turtle refuge
A protected beach south of town where olive ridley turtles arrive in mass nesting events between roughly July and January. Visits are with rangers after dark.
-
Ometepe island
Two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua, reached by ferry from San Jorge, with hiking, springs and petroglyphs. Worth two nights rather than a day trip.
-
Vigoron and fresh fish
The Nicaraguan staple of yucca, cabbage slaw and pork crackling turns up everywhere, alongside grilled snapper straight off the boats on the seafront.
