Salzburg
Mozart's city under snow is close to theatrical parody: baroque domes, a clifftop fortress, market stalls smelling of gingerbread in the cathedral square.

Why go
Two halves face each other across the Salzach: a dense baroque old town under a limestone cliff, and a nineteenth-century side with gardens and wider streets. The scale is small, the churches are grand out of all proportion to the population, and the Alps begin at the edge of town. Music is not a marketing line here; it runs through the year and fills the churches as much as the concert halls.
Two or three nights is right, and it works in any season. Summer brings the festival and full hotels, winter the markets and short cold days, and spring the Salzkammergut lakes an hour east. Munich is under two hours by train and Vienna about two and a half. Anyone allergic to Mozart merchandise will need to walk two streets off the main route.

From our guides
Hear a Mozart concert in the Marble Hall of the Mirabell Palace, ride the funicular up to Hohensalzburg for the white-roofed panorama, and drink glühwein where the Christkindlmarkt has stood since the fifteenth century. The Krampus parades in early December add a pleasing note of menace.

Things to do
-
Getreidegasse
The old town's main lane is narrow, roofed with wrought-iron guild signs and lined with passages cutting through to parallel streets. Mozart was born at number nine.
-
Cathedral and Residenz
A vast early baroque cathedral opens onto a sequence of linked squares, with the prince-archbishops' state rooms and picture gallery alongside.
-
Hellbrunn trick fountains
A summer palace south of the city with hidden water jets built to soak dinner guests in the 1610s. Still operating, and children love the whole business.
-
Monchsberg walk
A path along the cliff above the old town links the modern art museum with viewpoints over the rooftops. Lifts save you the climb up.
-
St Peter's cemetery
Arcaded graves against the rock face beside one of the oldest monasteries in the German-speaking world, with catacomb chapels cut into the cliff above.
-
Salzkammergut lakes
Hallstatt, Wolfgangsee and Mondsee sit within an hour to the east, reachable by bus or train for a day of water, mountains and lake steamers.

Getting around
The historic centre is compact and walkable, with the funicular up to the Hohensalzburg fortress and buses across the river to Mirabell and the Christmas markets.
Public transport: City buses and regional trains are frequent, and the old town is largely pedestrianised anyway.

Historic city hotels and small guesthouses in the old town, chains and business hotels across the river, plus apartments. A few grand addresses, and no resorts of any kind.

Best base overall
The Altstadt
On the left bank beneath the fortress, with the cathedral square markets, Getreidegasse and the concert halls all on foot. Rooms are small, old and expensive, and the bells start early.

Neustadt around Mirabell
The right bank, flat, with the palace gardens, the Christmas market and a bridge into the old town. More space in the rooms and an easier walk with a pushchair.

Maxglan
A residential district towards the airport, with cheaper hotels and guesthouses and a reliable bus into the centre. Nothing to look at, but the savings are real in December.

Quietest
Nonntal
Behind the Monchsberg, ten minutes' walk from the old town and considerably calmer, with views up to the fortress. Fewer restaurants, and the walk home is uphill.

Worth knowing before you book: Advent weekends, Easter and the summer festival in late July and August sell the city out at premium rates. Concert tickets are booked separately and early, especially festival performances.

- Book ahead
- Concert tickets, festival seats and hotel rooms in July, August and December sell out early. Book several months ahead for those periods.
- Timing
- Rain is common year-round, since the city sits against the Alps. Build in an indoor plan for at least one day of any trip.
- Cash or card
- Cards are accepted widely, though traditional cafes and market stalls sometimes prefer cash. Christmas market stalls often take euro notes only.
