Rulantica
Europa-Park's indoor Nordic water world applies the same obsessive craft to slides that its parent park applies to coasters — you queue through a Norse village, not a corridor — and the water stays warm whatever the Black Forest weather is doing.

Why go
The water park sits beside Europa-Park at Rust, on the edge of the Black Forest near the French border, and follows a Norse theme through a series of indoor halls and an outdoor section. There are slides for every level of nerve, a wave pool, a slow river and warm water throughout. Design and theming are the point; this is not a municipal pool with flumes attached.
Almost nobody comes for the water park alone. It pairs with the theme park next door, with on-site hotels and a camping resort, and works as the indoor half of a trip that is otherwise weather-dependent. Strasbourg is under an hour away and Freiburg a similar distance. German and French school holidays are the busiest weeks, and it opens year-round.

From our guides
Toddlers get their own lagoon; teenagers race the multi-lane mat slides. It works brilliantly as day two of a Europa-Park stay, with discounted combined tickets for hotel guests. Book online ahead, as daily capacity is capped.

Things to do
-
The slide tower
A central climbing structure carries slides of escalating severity, from gentle tubes to near-vertical drops. Older children tend to vanish into it for hours.
-
Wave pool
A large indoor wave pool under a themed roof, with regular sets and shallow edges. The default meeting point when a family inevitably splits up.
-
The slow river
A gentle circuit that runs indoors and then outside, warm enough to stay in when it is snowing on the other side of the glass.
-
Outdoor area in summer
From late spring an outdoor section opens with more slides and lawns, which takes real pressure off the indoor halls in the hottest weeks.
-
Europa-Park next door
Germany's largest theme park is a short walk away, with coasters and themed European quarters on a separate ticket. Two days covers both properly.
-
Strasbourg and the Black Forest
Rust sits between the Rhine and the forest, with Strasbourg's cathedral and old town under an hour away by road for a change of pace.

Getting around
Rulantica stands beside Europa-Park with the resort hotels a short walk or shuttle ride away, so once you are in Rust nothing else needs driving.
Public transport: A shuttle bus runs from Ringsheim station on the Freiburg to Offenburg line, but connections from the French side are awkward.

Where to stay
Europa-Park's own themed hotels and camp resort, village guesthouses, and a good supply of holiday flats in Rust. Very few chains, and almost everything is priced around the park.

Best base overall
Rust
The village wrapped around Europa-Park, with guesthouses, holiday flats and a short walk or shuttle to both the park and the water world. It exists for the park, so expect little else.

Good to know
- Book ahead
- Daily capacity is capped and tickets are timed. Buy online before travelling, especially for weekends and school holidays.
- Bring this
- A padlock or coin for lockers, plus towels and flip-flops, which are chargeable to hire. Some slides do not allow shorts with pockets.
- Timing
- Arrive at opening or after mid-afternoon. The middle of the day brings the longest slide queues, particularly in winter.
- With kids
- Height restrictions apply to most of the bigger slides and are enforced. Check them before promising anything to a determined seven-year-old.
- Getting there
- Rust lies near the A5 between Karlsruhe and Basel, with a shuttle from Ringsheim station on the Freiburg line and airports at Basel and Strasbourg.
