Riga

Riga's medieval Old Town looks the part but pours tourist prices at weekend-break volume; the locals drink along Miera iela, a scruffy-cool street of bars, and in the converted zeppelin hangars and yards around the Central Market, where Latvian craft beer costs a fraction of the old-town rate.

Why go

Latvia's capital is bigger and stranger than a weekend-break brochure suggests. Beyond the medieval core there is a whole district of art nouveau apartment blocks, a broad river, and wooden suburbs that survived everything the twentieth century threw at them. It is walkable, cheap by northern European standards, and takes its food and drink more seriously with each passing year.

Two or three nights covers it comfortably, with a train out to Jurmala's pine-backed beach or to Sigulda's castles in the Gauja valley. Summer means long light evenings and outdoor tables; midwinter is dark by four and very cold, which is when the cellar bars and bathhouses earn their reputation. Stag groups still turn up in the Old Town at weekends, so choose your street with care.

From our guides

Try Riga Black Balsam — a tar-dark herbal liqueur — in a cocktail rather than neat, at least initially. Summer brings 10pm sunsets; winter, blissfully warm cellars.

Things to do

  1. Art Nouveau District

Alberta iela and the streets around it hold one of Europe's densest collections of Jugendstil facades, many by Mikhail Eisenstein. Look up, because the detail is all above head height.

  2. House of the Blackheads

The gabled guildhall on Town Hall Square was flattened in the war and rebuilt in the 1990s from photographs and drawings. Theatrical, and the city's best-known building.

  3. Riga Cathedral organ

Lunchtime and evening recitals fill the brick cathedral with one of the largest organs in Europe. Tickets are inexpensive and the acoustics do the rest.

  4. Latvian National Museum of Art

A restored neoclassical building holding the country's own painters, who are far less familiar than they deserve to be, plus good temporary shows and a roof terrace.

  5. Jurmala

A half-hour train ride reaches 30 kilometres of white sand backed by pines and wooden villas. Latvians treat it as their summer garden and the water stays shallow and cold.

  6. Pirts, the Latvian bathhouse

The local sauna involves birch whisks, herbal steam and a cold plunge, usually booked as a group session. Winter is very much the right season for it.

Where to stay

Boutique hotels in restored merchant houses, international chains in the centre and a great many apartments. Hostels are plentiful, and genuine luxury is limited to a handful of addresses.

  • Best base overall

    Centrs

The art nouveau grid around Elizabetes and Alberta streets, a ten minute walk from the old town with better value hotels and grown up restaurants. Quiet by night, which is the point.

    Vecriga, the Old Town

Cobbles, spires and every landmark on your doorstep, but also stag parties, tourist pricing and cellar bars that empty at three. Ask for a room facing a courtyard.

    Miera iela and Avoti

The scruffy cool quarter behind the Academy of Sciences, with craft beer bars, cheap flats to rent and locals rather than visitors. Twenty minutes on foot into the centre.

  • Quietest

    Agenskalns

Across the river among wooden houses and a restored market hall, with apartments at low rates and a tram to town. You are commuting to the sights, which some people prefer.

Worth knowing before you book: Weekends bring stag groups and the old town charges accordingly, so midweek is cheaper and calmer. Check whether the summer solstice or the song festival falls in your week.

Good to know

Getting there
The airport sits about ten kilometres from the centre with a frequent bus link. Coaches and trains reach Tallinn and Vilnius in four to five hours.
Cash or card
The euro is the currency and cards work almost everywhere, including on public transport. A little cash still helps at market stalls.
Timing
Midsummer, around 23 June, empties the city as Latvians head to the countryside. December brings a Christmas market and temperatures well below zero.
Crowds
Old Town bars near Livu Square lean towards stag parties and inflated prices. Walk ten minutes north or east and the city changes character completely.
Pack this
Proper winter clothing from November to March, including boots with grip for icy pavements. Summer evenings by the river still need a jacket.
