Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden

The little parish church of St Sebastian, posing by its stream with the Reiter Alpe behind, may be the most painted view in the Bavarian Alps — and Ramsau itself stays remarkably unhurried.

Why go

Alpine Bavaria at its most low-key: a scattered village of timber farmhouses spread along a milky glacial stream, hemmed in by the Hochkalter and the Watzmann's long ridge. Days here are spent walking, whether that means the level path around the Hintersee or a full climb into the national park above. There is no resort centre and very little to buy, which is precisely why people come back.

It works best as a base rather than a stop. Berchtesgaden is ten minutes away, Salzburg under an hour, and the national park sits on the doorstep. Trails open properly from late May and stay good into October, when the larches turn; deep winter swaps hiking for snowshoes and quiet. Anyone wanting nightlife, shopping or a lively bar scene should look elsewhere.

Quiet, green, alpine and unhurried

From our guides

Amble the Malerwinkel painters' path, then head to nearby Königssee, where near-silent electric boats glide beneath sheer walls to the chapel at St Bartholomä. Stay overnight and catch the lake before the day boats start; October's larch colour is a quiet marvel.

Things to do

  1. Hintersee and the Zauberwald

A small green lake below the Reiter Alpe, reached through a boulder field of moss and fallen trees left by an ancient landslide. The loop takes under an hour.

  2. Wimbachklamm gorge

Walkways bolted into a narrow limestone gorge where meltwater sprays through the rock. Continue up the Wimbach valley afterwards for a long, gentle walk into the mountains.

  3. Obersee and Rothbachfall

From the far end of the Konigssee a short walk leads to Obersee, a smaller lake with Germany's highest waterfall dropping behind it. Far quieter than the main jetty.

  4. Jenner cable car

The gondola above Schonau lifts you to a viewing platform with the lake directly below and the Watzmann opposite. An easy way to get high without a long climb.

  5. Kehlsteinhaus and Obersalzberg

A mountain bus and a brass-lined lift tunnelled into the rock reach the Eagle's Nest, now a restaurant and viewpoint, with sobering documentation at the centre below.

  6. Salzburg for a day

Mozart's city is well under an hour by road, which redeems a wet day with baroque squares, galleries and coffee houses before you head back to the mountains.
