Rafting the Zambezi, Zimbabwe and Zambia

Happens around Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe — nearest airport Victoria Falls (VFA), about 19km away.

The experience

Below Victoria Falls the Zambezi cuts into the Batoka Gorge, and the rapids that follow are among the most demanding commercially rafted anywhere. A full day covers a long sequence of grade four and five water with a reputation and a set of nicknames to match. No previous experience is required: briefings are thorough, safety kayakers accompany every raft, and swimming after a flip is treated as routine rather than a crisis.

Low water, roughly August to December, opens the full run and the biggest rapids; high water in the first months of the year shortens or closes it. Most people raft from Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe or Livingstone in Zambia, and build three or four nights around it with the falls themselves, a gorge swing and a sunset river cruise. The climb out of the gorge at the end is steep and hot.

From our guides

First-timers are welcome: guides brief hard, safety kayakers shadow every raft, and unscheduled swims are considered part of the syllabus. Low-water season, roughly August to December, serves the biggest rapids. The 200-metre hike out of the gorge afterwards is its own workout.

Make a trip of it

  1. The full day run

A long day through a numbered sequence of rapids in the gorge, broken by flat stretches, a riverside lunch and a great deal of adrenaline.

  2. The walk out

A steep climb of around 200 metres up the gorge wall at the finish, in afternoon heat. It surprises people more than the rapids do.

  3. Victoria Falls itself

The mile-wide curtain of water on the border, walkable from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides for very different views.

  4. Devil's Pool

A natural rock pool at the lip of the falls on the Zambian side, accessible only in low water and only with a guide.

  5. The gorge swing and zip lines

Wire and rope activities strung across the Batoka Gorge, usually booked as an add-on the day before or after.

  6. Sunset on the upper river

Cruises above the falls drift past hippos and elephants on the bank, and act as the calm counterweight to the rafting.

Nearest airport to Victoria Falls, about 19km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Victoria Falls

About 20 minutes by taxi or transfer from Livingstone (LVI) into Livingstone town, or roughly an hour to Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe including the border formalities at the bridge.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Rafting companies collect you from your hotel and drive to the gorge rim; both towns are small and walkable by day, though transfers are usual after dark.

Public transport: There is little useful public transport for visitors, but hotels, operators and taxis handle every transfer.

Safari style lodges and tented camps along the river, colonial era hotels near the falls, plus backpacker hostels. Big chains exist, but most beds are independent and activity focused.

  • Best base overall

    Victoria Falls town

Compact, walkable to the falls entrance and where most rafting companies collect from. Rooms cover every budget, and touts along the main street are persistent but harmless.

The hotel gardens on the town's edge, with pools, lawns and warthogs mowing them, and the falls a short walk or shuttle away. Do not let children wander after dark.
