Puy du Fou
No rides at all, yet France's second-most-visited park has no queues worth managing — just staggeringly ambitious live shows: Roman chariot races in a full-size amphitheatre, Viking longships bursting out of the water, falconry with hundreds of birds swirling overhead.

Why go
A theme park with no rollercoasters, built around large-scale historical shows in the Vendée countryside. Performances run in purpose-built arenas: chariot racing in a Roman amphitheatre, a Viking raid staged on and in a lake, falconry using hundreds of birds, plus recreated villages from different centuries to fill the gaps between them. It draws millions of visitors a year and the production values sit closer to theatre than to a fairground.
Two days lets you see nearly everything without route-marching between arenas, since shows run to a timetable and the good seats go early. The Cinéscénie, a separate evening spectacle with a large volunteer cast on an enormous outdoor set, needs booking well ahead. The park is around ninety minutes from Nantes and open roughly from spring to early autumn. Shows are in French, with translation available on request.

Things to do
-
Le Signe du Triomphe
Chariot races, gladiators and lions in a full-size Gallo-Roman amphitheatre, and the show most visitors end up rating highest of all.
-
Les Vikings
A longship surfaces from the middle of the lake during the performance, which is the moment children tend to talk about for weeks afterwards.
-
Le Bal des Oiseaux Fantômes
Hundreds of birds of prey, storks and vultures flying low over a ruined castle setting. Sit high if you dislike things passing close overhead.
-
La Cinéscénie
A night-time show on a vast lakeside set, performed by a large volunteer cast. Ticketed separately and often sold out months ahead.
-
The recreated villages
Streets built to medieval, eighteenth-century and other periods, with craftspeople working, useful for filling the gaps between show times.
-
Mousquetaire de Richelieu
An indoor show combining horses, flamenco dancing and swordplay, and the most reliable option to hold in reserve when the weather turns.

Where to stay
The park's own themed hotels and lodges, plus village chambres d'hotes, gites and the standard chain hotels around Cholet. Nothing luxurious, and very little walkable to the gates.
-
Best base overall
Les Epesses
The village at the park gates, plus Puy du Fou's own themed hotels next to them. Handy for the late Cinescenie finish, though there is little else to do after dark.

Mortagne-sur-Sevre
A riverside town twenty minutes north where the Vendee steam railway runs, giving you a second day out. Family rooms are easier to find here than in the villages.

Cholet
The nearest sizeable town, half an hour away, with chain hotels, budget rates and restaurants open late. Charmless by comparison, but it solves the room problem.

Clisson
An unusual Italianate town of red tiles and vineyards on the Nantes road, good for a Muscadet tasting. It is a drive from the park rather than a stroll.

Worth knowing before you book: Cinescenie nights empty the area of rooms, so book the show and the bed together, months ahead for summer Saturdays. The park runs a short season, so check dates first.
