The festival

Primavera Sound takes over the Parc del Fòrum, a concrete seafront site at the northern end of Barcelona, for several days in late spring. The programming is the draw: guitar bands, rap, techno and pop booked without much regard for genre, across stages that run from mid-afternoon until sunrise. There is no campsite, so the festival empties back into the city each morning and everyone sleeps in a real bed.

Build the trip around a late start: beaches, the Gothic Quarter or Montjuïc by day, site from six in the evening, home somewhere around dawn. Rooms across the city are booked out within days of the line-up landing, so accommodation comes first and sightseeing second. Adding two or three nights either side turns it into a proper Barcelona holiday. Anyone who wants early nights or a quiet hotel should look at a different weekend.

Hard standing, sea on one side and stages spread widely enough that sound rarely bleeds. Comfortable shoes matter more than at a field festival.

Headliners often start after midnight and smaller stages run to sunrise, which makes the late metro service part of the plan.

The city beaches are twenty minutes from the site and function as the recovery room between afternoons and evenings.

Bars, vermouth and cheap lunches within walking distance of most accommodation, and the obvious way to fill a slow morning.

The Parc del Fòrum site is at the northern end of the seafront, reached by metro line 4 to El Maresme Fòrum in around twenty minutes from the centre, with extra late services during the festival.

Public transport: Excellent. Metro, buses and night services cover the festival hours, and there is no camping to complicate matters.
