PortAventura

An hour south of Barcelona, PortAventura bolts a serious coaster park — Shambhala's first drop is a rite of passage — onto Mediterranean beaches, so you can alternate ride days with sand days.

Why go

PortAventura World sits between Salou and Vila-seca on the Costa Daurada, an hour by road or rail from Barcelona. The main park is split into six themed worlds, and the coaster line-up is genuinely strong for Europe: Shambhala climbs above 70 metres, Dragon Khan turns eight times and Furius Baco leaves the station fast enough to rearrange your face. Around it sit a water park, a Ferrari-themed park and several on-site hotels.

Two full days covers the main park comfortably, three if you add the water park in high summer. Most families base themselves on the coast at Salou or Cambrils and treat the beach as the rest day, which works well: the sand is wide and shallow-shelving, and Tarragona's Roman amphitheatre is twenty minutes north. August queues are punishing and the heat is real, so June, September and the shoulder weeks are far better value.

From our guides

The Ferrari Land add-on is skippable unless someone is car-obsessed; put that money towards an Express pass instead, which matters enormously here in August. SésamoAventura keeps the under-sixes happy while older siblings terrify themselves.

Things to do

  1. Shambhala

A hyper coaster rising above 70 metres with long floating drops and no inversions, which makes it the one nervous adults tend to enjoy.

  2. Dragon Khan

Eight inversions in under two minutes, and still one of the most looped coasters in Europe three decades after it opened.

  3. Furius Baco

A launched winged coaster that reaches full speed in a few seconds and stays low and violent throughout. Short, and not for the undecided.

  4. SésamoAventura

The Sesame Street area, with gentle rides, a small water play zone and useful shade, aimed squarely at the under-sevens.

  5. Caribe Aquatic Park

The adjacent water park, with slides, a wave pool and a lazy river. Worth a separate day once temperatures climb.

  6. Salou beach

A long stretch of soft sand a short shuttle or walk away, useful for the middle of the day when queues peak and shade runs out.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Reus (REU)

Nearest airport to PortAventura, about 6km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Salou

About fifteen minutes by taxi from Reus airport (REU) to Salou; from Barcelona (BCN) allow around an hour and a quarter by car, or take the train to PortAventura station.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

A dedicated station sits beside the park and the on-site hotels are a short walk from the gates, so the resort works without driving.

Public transport: Regional trains from Barcelona and Tarragona stop at PortAventura, and local buses run from Salou and Cambrils.

Where to stay

Large beach hotels, many all-inclusive, plus apartments and the on-site themed hotels. This is package-holiday country, so half board and full board are the norm.

  • Best base overall

    Salou

The resort town beside the park, with the beach, the promenade and a shuttle bus to the gates. It is loud in August and the strip near the centre attracts a young crowd.

    PortAventura's own hotels

On-site themed hotels give you early entry and a walk to the gates, which saves the daily commute. Food on site is expensive and the rooms are functional rather than special.

  • Quietest

    La Pineda

Ten minutes north, with a long flat beach, the water park and calmer family hotels. Fewer restaurants and bars, and you take a bus or taxi to the park.

  • Best value

    Cambrils

South along the coast, a working fishing town with better seafood and lower rates. It is fifteen minutes from the park, and the evenings are far more Spanish.

Worth knowing before you book: August is the worst combination of heat and queues, and Express passes sell out on the day. Book on-site if early entry matters, and check whether the park is on reduced winter opening.

The resort has its own rail station on the line from Barcelona, and Reus airport is about fifteen minutes away.
Timing
Ride the big coasters in the first hour or the last, and use the middle of the day for shows, shade and the smaller areas.
Pack this
Hats, refillable water bottles and a change of clothes. Several rides soak you thoroughly and the sun is relentless.
Height limits
Minimum heights are strict and vary widely by ride. Check them before promising anything to a child on the way in.
