Phantasialand

Half an hour from Cologne, Phantasialand crams the most intense theming in Europe into a compact site: Taron whips through a hand-built craggy village at absurd speed, Chiapas is arguably the world's best log flume and the whole park rewards wandering with detail.

Why go

Compact, densely themed and unusually good-looking for a theme park, this site half an hour south of Cologne trades size for detail. Several themed worlds are packed into a small footprint, with buildings, rockwork and planting doing as much work as the rides themselves. Queues are the constraint rather than walking distances. Taron and Black Mamba handle the adrenaline; Chiapas, a log flume, is the one people talk about afterwards.

A single day covers most of it if you arrive at opening, and two days makes everything relaxed. Cologne is the obvious base, with the cathedral and old town for a second day, and the park is reachable by train and shuttle bus. Peak season is summer and the winter opening period, while spring and autumn weekdays are far quieter. Younger children are limited by height restrictions on the headline rides.

From our guides

Compact also means merciful walking distances for small legs. Ride Taron at opening before the queue builds, and stay at the Rookburgh hotel if the budget stretches — you sleep inside the steampunk land itself.

Featured in Ten theme park trips that are actually worth the hype

Things to do

  1. Taron

A launched coaster threading through a hand-built rock village at speed, with several near-misses designed into the layout. Ride it at opening.

  2. Chiapas

A log flume with multiple drops and a backwards section, themed as a Mexican village and widely rated among the best of its type in Europe.

  3. Black Mamba

An inverted coaster set in a jungle-themed area, running partly below ground level so the trees pass close overhead.

  4. F.L.Y.

A flying coaster built through the steampunk world of Rookburgh, where the queue, the hotel and the ride share one continuous set.

  5. Klugheim rockwork

The artificial basalt village built around Taron is worth walking through on its own, with viewpoints over the track and trains passing overhead.

  6. The winter season

The park decorates and lights the whole site for its winter opening, which is a very different experience from a summer afternoon.

Where to stay

Themed on-site hotels, standard town hotels in Brühl and the full range of city hotels and apartments in Cologne and Bonn. On-site rooms are the only ones with early entry.

  • Best base overall

    Brühl

The town beside the park, with hotels, a station on the Cologne to Bonn line and the palaces for a non-ride day. Nothing exciting after dark, but the morning commute is ten minutes.

    Phantasialand's own hotels

Rookburgh, Ling Bao and Matamba sit at the gates with early entry to the park, which is worth more than any express queue. They cost a great deal and book out early.

  • Closest to the sights

    Cologne

Half an hour by train, with the cathedral, restaurants and a proper city evening after the park closes. Better value than you might expect, and the trains run late.

  • Best value

    Bonn

Twenty minutes the other way, generally cheaper than Cologne with a pleasant riverside centre. Handy for families wanting museums between park days.

Worth knowing before you book: Book on-site months ahead if early entry matters, since Rookburgh in particular sells out. Check the park calendar first, as Phantasialand closes for several weeks between seasons.

Good to know

Getting there
Bruhl, between Cologne and Bonn, is the nearest town, with train connections and a shuttle bus to the gates. Parking is available on site.
Timing
Weekdays outside German school holidays are much quieter. Arriving at opening and going straight to Taron saves the longest queue of the day.
With kids
Height restrictions apply to the major coasters. Check them before travelling with younger children, as the gentler rides are fewer here.
Book ahead
Tickets are date-based and cheaper online, and the on-site hotels book up months ahead for weekends and the winter season.
Pack this
The park is compact but outdoors, so bring rain gear. Chiapas and the other water rides will soak you properly.
