Ometepe
Two volcanoes rise from Lake Nicaragua joined by a low isthmus, and that hourglass silhouette — Ometepe — hosts one of Central America's gentlest island scenes: banana farms, petroglyphs, kayaking the Istián river between the peaks and swimming in the mineral-clear Ojo de Agua pool.

Why go
Concepcion and Maderas dominate everything on this island, one a near-perfect cone that clears its cloud on good mornings, the other a green, forested hulk with a crater lagoon at the top. Between them the land flattens into banana plantations, dirt roads and lake beaches the colour of weak tea. Life runs slowly. You hire a scooter, you swim, you eat fried plantain, you listen to howler monkeys work the trees.
Ferries cross from San Jorge in about an hour, which makes the island an easy addition to Granada or the Pacific surf coast. Two or three nights suits most people, longer if you plan to climb. The dry season from November to April gives firmer trails and clearer views, while the green months turn the volcano paths to mud and keep the summits hidden in cloud for days.

From our guides
Ferries cross from San Jorge in an hour; motion-sensitive travellers should take the larger boat. Climb Maderas, the greener volcano, with a guide. Dry season runs November to April.

Things to do
-
Ojo de Agua
Spring-fed pools of cold, mineral-clear water walled in stone under mango trees, a short ride from Santo Domingo. This is the island's reliable afternoon swim.
-
Climbing Volcan Maderas
A guided round trip of roughly eight hours through cloud forest to a crater lagoon, muddy and steep for most of its length. Guides are compulsory and worth it.
-
Punta Jesus Maria
A long sand spit that reaches out into the lake at sunset, with the cone of Concepcion behind you and open water on either side.
-
Petroglyphs at Altagracia
Pre-Columbian carvings of spirals, faces and animals are scattered across boulders on the lower slopes and gathered in the town's small museum.
-
Kayaking the Rio Istian
The narrow channel between the two volcanoes threads through reeds and mangrove, good for turtles, caimans and a great many birds early in the day.
-
Santo Domingo beach
The isthmus beach faces east across the lake and catches the wind, which makes it the island's swimming and kitesurfing strip.

Getting around
The island's ring road is partly paved and partly rough, and distances between Moyogalpa, Santa Cruz and Ojo de Agua are real, so most people hire a scooter, quad or driver.
Public transport: Local buses do circle the island but they are slow and infrequent, and nothing runs late.

Where to stay
Family hospedajes, eco-lodges and farm stays with hammocks, plus a few comfortable hotels on the isthmus. No chains, patchy hot water, and power cuts are routine.
-
Best base overall
Moyogalpa
The ferry port town, with the most rooms, the ATMs, scooter hire and onward transport. Nobody comes to Ometepe for Moyogalpa itself, so treat it as the practical arrival base.

Quietest
Santa Cruz and Balgüe
The Maderas side, where farm lodges and permaculture places sit among banana plantations with volcano views. Roads deteriorate the further you go and buses are infrequent.

Best with children
Santo Domingo
The isthmus beach between the two volcanoes, with shallow lake swimming, hotels with gardens and Ojo de Agua nearby. Windy most afternoons, which cools things but stirs up the water.

Best value
Altagracia
The island's other town, with basic hospedajes at local prices and the petroglyph museum. Little in the way of tourist infrastructure, and the second ferry dock is at nearby San José.

Worth knowing before you book: Book the first night before you sail, because ferries arrive late and taxis vanish. Dry-season weekends and Semana Santa fill the isthmus hotels with Nicaraguan families.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Ferries run from San Jorge near Rivas. The larger vessels are steadier than the small wooden boats, which matters when the lake gets choppy in the afternoon.
- Roads
- Much of the island is unpaved and rough. Scooters are widely hired but falls on gravel are common; a quad or a driver is the safer choice after rain.
- Cash
- Cash machines are limited to the main towns and often empty. Bring cordobas over from the mainland to cover a few days.
- Insects
- Mosquitoes are constant near the shore at dusk. Repellent and a fan or a net make a real difference to the night.
- Timing
- November to April is dry. Trails on Maderas stay slippery year-round, so bring shoes with grip rather than sandals.
