Ningaloo Reef

On Western Australia's remote Coral Coast, Ningaloo does what the Barrier Reef can't: the coral starts a swim from the beach, and between March and July whale sharks — the biggest fish in the sea — cruise the reef edge in numbers found almost nowhere else.

Why go

Western Australia's Coral Coast is red rock, spinifex and a fringing reef that starts a short swim from the sand, which means you can snorkel over coral gardens without a boat. Behind the beach, Cape Range's limestone gorges cut back into the plateau, and kangaroos come down to the shade at dusk. Distances are long, the towns are small, and the sense of remoteness is a large part of the appeal.

Five to seven nights is realistic given how far you have to travel to get here. The wildlife calendar sets the dates: whale sharks from around March to July, humpbacks from August, turtles nesting from November. Book swims and accommodation months ahead, since Exmouth and Coral Bay have limited beds. It is not a place for anyone who wants restaurants, nightlife or a short transfer from the airport.

From our guides

Licensed boats from Exmouth use spotter planes, so success rates are startlingly high. Humpbacks take over from August; turtles nest from November. Book whale-shark swims months ahead — they sell out fast.

Things to do

  1. Turquoise Bay

A drift snorkel where you enter at one end of the bay, let the current carry you over the coral and step out before the sandbar. Simple and superb.

  2. Whale shark swims

Licensed boats use spotter planes between roughly March and July, putting small groups in the water alongside the largest fish in the sea.

  3. Cape Range gorges

Yardie Creek and Mandu Mandu cut into the range behind the reef, with black-footed rock wallabies on the ledges and short walks along the rims.

  4. Coral Bay

A tiny settlement further south where the reef comes almost to the shore, with a sheltered bay that suits families and first-time snorkellers.

  5. Osprey Bay

A campsite and lookout on the western side of the cape, with reef breaks offshore and some of the best sunsets on the coast.

  6. Turtle nesting beaches

Green and loggerhead turtles nest along the Jurabi coast from November, with hatchlings emerging into the new year. Viewing rules are strict and posted.
