Mount Titlis
The final leg to 3,020 metres is aboard the Rotair, the world's first revolving cable car, which spins gently so every window seat becomes the best one.

Why go
Engelberg is a working alpine village in a green bowl of meadows, with a Benedictine monastery at its centre and cable cars lifting straight out of town towards ice. The mountain above is a properly glaciated summit rather than a viewpoint with a café bolted on, so the air thins as you rise, the light hardens and there is real snow underfoot in the middle of August.
The trip up and down takes half a day, which leaves the rest for the valley: waymarked walks through cow pasture in summer, long wide pistes in winter, and a monastery cheese dairy that runs at its own pace. Lucerne is under an hour away by train, so many visitors come and go in a day. Cloud can swallow the summit whole, so stay flexible and go on the clear morning.

From our guides
At the top: a glacier cave, a suspension bridge across a 500-metre drop and snow to throw in midsummer. It's unashamedly touristy and completely delightful. Buy tickets online for a small discount and aim for before 10am, ahead of the group tours from Lucerne.

Things to do
-
The revolving cable car
The final stage rotates slowly through 360 degrees on the way up the glacier, so every passenger gets the full sweep of ice and rock without jostling for a window.
-
Titlis Cliff Walk
A narrow suspension bridge strung along the cliff face at around 3,000 metres, with a long drop beneath the grating. Short, and quite enough for most people.
-
Glacier grotto
A tunnel bored into the ice at the summit station, lit blue and kept a few degrees below freezing. Take a jacket even if the valley is sweltering.
-
Trübsee lake circuit
A gentle hour on foot around a mountain lake at the middle station, with rowing boats in summer and reflections of the Titlis massif on calm days.
-
Engelberg Abbey
A baroque monastery still occupied by monks, with a show dairy attached where the valley's cheese is made. A quiet counterweight to the summit circus.
-
Brunni and the Ristis terrace
The sunny side of the valley, reached by a separate cable car, with easy family walks and the best straight-on view back at Titlis and its glacier.

The cable-car base station is a walk from most of the village, and the monastery, shops and train to Lucerne are all here. It is busy with day groups from mid-morning.

Worth knowing before you book: Engelberg is a day-trip town, so book the first cable car of the day and expect hotel prices to rise sharply in the ski season and over Swiss holidays.
Search everything else in Engelberg by budget. These are indicative budget bands in GBP per night for two people, not live quotes or guarantees of hotel type. Check your dates, guests, taxes and final price on Booking.com.
Good to know
- Timing
- Aim for the first cable cars of the day. Coach groups from Lucerne tend to arrive mid-morning and the summit station fills quickly after that.
- Weather
- Check the summit webcams before you buy a ticket. In cloud you pay full price to stand inside a fogged-in building.
- Pack this
- Warm layers, sunglasses and sunscreen. Snow glare at 3,000 metres burns faces that were fine in the valley an hour earlier.
- Tickets
- Buying online in advance usually costs a little less than at the counter, and Swiss rail passes give reductions on the ascent.
- With kids
- The glacier park with its tubing run and chairlift keeps children happy at the top, but it is seasonal and closes in bad weather.
