Why go

Europe's highest cable-car station lifts you from Zermatt's larch forests to permanent glacier in well under an hour, ending at 3,883 metres on the shoulder of the Klein Matterhorn. From the viewing platform, thirty-eight peaks over four thousand metres are labelled and laid out around you, with the Matterhorn itself close enough to feel improbable. An ice palace tunnelled into the glacier and a run of glass-floored cabins add theatre to the ascent.

Most people treat it as a half-day trip from Zermatt, riding up for the views and the altitude experience rather than to ski, though it doubles as a year-round glacier ski area. The altitude is genuinely serious, so take the top station slowly, drink water beforehand and skip it if you have a heart or lung condition. Clear mornings give the best visibility, before afternoon cloud tends to build.

From our guides

Up top: an ice palace carved into the glacier, a platform counting thirty-eight four-thousanders and the Matterhorn itself startlingly close. The Crystal Ride cabins have glass floors for the brave. This is serious altitude — take the top station slowly and drink water beforehand.

Things to do

  1. Klein Matterhorn viewing platform

Europe's highest observation deck at 3,883 metres, with a panorama that takes in thirty-eight peaks over four thousand metres.

  2. Crystal Ride cable car

Glass-floored cabins on the final stretch of the ascent give an uninterrupted view straight down to the glacier below.

  3. Glacier Palace

An ice cave carved deep into the glacier itself, with sculpted tunnels and chambers kept naturally cold and lit blue year-round.

  4. Year-round glacier skiing

One of the few ski areas in the Alps open through summer, popular with racing teams training outside the winter season.

  5. Matterhorn close-up views

The mountain's distinctive pyramid shape is visible from almost every angle of the station, closer and more three-dimensional than from the valley.

  6. Zermatt's larch forest descent

Cable cars and gondolas lower down pass through forest trails good for an easier walk back towards town in summer.
