Car hire in Beau VallonThe Seychelles' main island hides a mountainous green interior most visitors never touch: the Morne Seychellois trails climb through mist forest with ocean views that reset your screensaver standards.

Mahé is the largest and most mountainous of the Seychelles' granite islands, its interior draped in mist forest and its coast fringed with some of the most photographed beaches in the Indian Ocean. Victoria, the tiny capital, has a clock tower, a spice market and little else in the way of a big city. Most of the drama is natural: giant granite boulders tumbling into turquoise water, and forest trails that climb straight from the coast road.
A week allows time to explore Mahé properly and hop by ferry or short flight to Praslin or La Digue for their own beaches and coco de mer palms. The west coast has the calmer swimming beaches; the east and south get more wind, which suits kitesurfers. April, May, October and November bring the lightest winds and calmest seas, either side of the trade-wind months.
From our guides
Below, beaches like Anse Major — reachable only on foot or by boat — and reef snorkelling at Port Launay complete the pairing. April, May, October and November bring the calmest seas.

A coastal footpath reachable only on foot or by boat, ending at a secluded cove backed by granite boulders and good snorkelling.
Mahé's longest and most popular beach, with calm, shallow water and a run of beachfront restaurants for sunset drinks.
Forested trails climb through mist and endemic palms to viewpoints over the whole west coast, including the popular Trois Frères hike.
A small, easy-to-walk capital where the covered Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market sells spices, fish and fruit each morning.
Sheltered reef snorkelling close to shore, with parrotfish and the occasional turtle drifting through calm, clear, shallow water year-round.
A rum distillery near the south coast offering tastings and a look at how the local spirit is made.
The airport is on the doorstep.
About 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or transfer from Seychelles International (SEZ), north through Victoria and over the hill to the west coast.
A hire car or taxi reaches the Morne Seychellois trailheads and Port Launay; Anse Major is only walkable from Danzilles or reachable by boat, and inter-island ferries to Praslin leave from Victoria.
Public transport: Cheap public buses circle the island and are genuinely usable, but they stop early in the evening and do not reach the remoter bays.
