Lugano
Switzerland with the accent and appetite of Italy: Lugano curls around its palm-fringed lake beneath the twin sugarloaves of Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore, both climbed by century-old funiculars.

Why go
An Italian-speaking Swiss city on a lake of the same name, wrapped around a bay with a steep peak on either side. Palm trees line the promenade, the architecture leans Lombard and the food is northern Italian, yet the trains still run to the minute. The centre is small, arcaded and largely pedestrianised, and the mountains begin immediately behind it, which is what saves it from feeling suburban.
Milan is under an hour away by train and Zurich around two hours through the base tunnel, so this works as a stop as much as a stay. Swim from the lidos, take the funiculars up Monte Brè and San Salvatore, and use the boats to reach the lakeside villages. May to September is the season, with the water warm from July. Prices are Swiss, and spring rain can be persistent.

From our guides
Swim from the lido, ferry-hop to the impossibly pretty fishing village of Gandria and eat polenta under the arcades of Piazza della Riforma. The lake stays swimmable well into September, when hotel rates soften and the light turns golden. Milan is under an hour by train.

Things to do
-
Monte San Salvatore
A funicular climbs to a rocky summit with a chapel and a view over the whole lake and south into Italy.
-
Monte Brè
The second funicular reaches a village of narrow lanes and painted houses on one of the sunniest slopes in Switzerland.
-
Gandria
A car-free fishing village clinging to the shore below Monte Brè, reached by boat or a level walk along the old customs path.
-
Parco Ciani
A lakeside park of huge specimen trees and formal beds beside the centre, with a public bathing area just beyond it.
-
The regional art museum
The lakeside cultural centre houses the art museum of Italian-speaking Switzerland, with a programme leaning modern and international.
-
Monte Generoso
A rack railway from Capolago climbs to about 1,700 metres for a view taking in the Alps, the lakes and the Po plain.

Where to stay
Grand lakeside hotels and Belle Epoque survivors, modern business four-stars in the centre, and a scattering of guesthouses and apartments in the outer quarters. Budget beds are genuinely scarce.

Best base overall
Centro and the lakefront promenade
Staying between Piazza della Riforma and the lake puts the ferries, the funiculars and the arcaded restaurants at your door. It is the priciest patch, and lake-view rooms carry a clear premium.

Paradiso
A short stroll or two minutes by train around the bay, Paradiso has the San Salvatore funicular, a lido and more mid-range hotels than the centre. The main road runs through it, so ask for a rear room.

Cassarate and Castagnola
East of the river you get the public lido, parks, gentler streets and family-sized apartments, with the Monte Bre funicular nearby. Restaurants are more residential than glamorous.

Gandria
A car-free fishing village clinging to the shore, reached by boat or a lakeside path. Wonderfully still in the evening, but you are tied to the last ferry and the steps are unforgiving with luggage.

Worth knowing before you book: Rates spike around Milan's big trade fairs and design week, when Lugano becomes an overflow city, so check the Milan calendar before you fix dates.
