Ljubljana
Slovenia's capital is small enough to learn in a weekend and pretty enough to justify the effort: a willow-lined river, Plečnik's pale bridges, a castle on its wooded hill and a centre closed to cars entirely.

Why go
A capital of fewer than 300,000 people, built along a green river with a castle on the hill above it. The centre is closed to cars, which makes the whole place feel like one long terrace: baroque facades, Plečnik's bridges and colonnades, willows leaning over the water. You can walk it end to end in twenty minutes. A large university population keeps it lively without ever making it loud.
Two nights covers the city comfortably, and it works well at the start or end of a Slovenian trip, with Bled fifty minutes away and the coast under two hours. Trains and buses run to Vienna, Zagreb and Venice. Spring and early autumn are the best months, and summer weekends can empty out as locals head for the lakes. Winter brings a good Christmas market and cold, foggy days.

From our guides
Take the funicular up before sunset, then come down for dinner at the riverside terraces near the Triple Bridge. It is also among the cheapest capitals in Europe, so put the difference towards a better room with a castle view.

Things to do
-
Ljubljana Castle
Reached by funicular or a fifteen-minute climb, with a viewing tower, a puppet museum and a view over red roofs to the Alps.
-
Plečnik's city
The architect reshaped the centre in the early twentieth century, and the Triple Bridge, the market colonnade and the national library are all his.
-
Central Market
The riverside market has produce stalls and a fish hall below, plus a Friday open kitchen event in season where local cooks set up outdoors.
-
Metelkova
A former army barracks squatted and turned into an autonomous arts complex, covered in mosaic and sculpture, with concerts most weekends.
-
Tivoli Park
A large park running right up to the centre, with a photography avenue, wooded paths and a genuine escape from the crowds.
-
The riverside terraces
Both banks between the Triple Bridge and the Cobblers' Bridge are lined with cafés. The ritual is a long coffee and watching everyone pass.

Getting around
The centre is closed to cars and easily walked, with a funicular up to the castle and free electric buggies for anyone who would rather not. City buses cover the outer districts.
Public transport: Good. A city bus network and cheap bike hire serve the capital, and trains and coaches run to Bled, Postojna and the coast.

Where to stay
Small boutique hotels and apartment rentals in the centre, a strong design-hostel scene and business chains near the station. The city is small, so almost everything is walkable.
-
Best base overall
Old Town, around Stari trg
The car-free lanes below the castle, with the market, the Triple Bridge and the riverside terraces at the door. Summer evenings on the embankment are loud beneath the windows.
Find stays in Old Town, around Stari trg -
Best with children
Trnovo and Krakovo
Low-rise streets of market gardens and villas ten minutes' walk south along the river, with parks and quiet. There are fewer restaurants, though the centre is an easy stroll.
Find stays in Trnovo and Krakovo -
Best for nightlife
Tabor and Metelkova
North-east of the centre, around the old barracks turned alternative arts complex, with clubs, bars and hostels. It looks rough and is entirely fine, but it is not restful.
Find stays in Tabor and Metelkova -
Best value
Bezigrad
A residential district north of the station with cheaper apartments and hotels and a fifteen-minute walk into town. There is nothing to see there, which keeps the price down.
Find stays in Bezigrad
Worth knowing before you book: Rooms are limited and the summer festival weeks fill fast, so book early for July and August. Old town flats sit above bars; ask which way the bedroom faces before you commit.
