Lake Bohinj
Bled's quieter, wilder sibling sits deeper in the Julian Alps: a glacial lake with water clean enough to drink, meadows running to the shoreline and Triglav National Park rising on every side.

Why go
Four kilometres long and hemmed by mountains on three sides, Bohinj lies at the end of a valley inside Triglav National Park. There is no ring of hotels, just a couple of villages, a stone bridge, a frescoed church and meadows running to the water. The lake is cold, clear and swimmable through high summer, and the walking starts directly from the shore rather than a car park somewhere else.
Two or three nights suits most people, either as a quieter alternative to Bled or a night or two added on. The Vogel cable car opens the high ground without effort, and the Savica waterfall and Mostnica gorge fill easy days. July and August are busy by local standards but never crushing, and the season narrows sharply either side. In winter, Vogel turns into a small ski area above the cloud.

From our guides
Twenty-six kilometres past Bled lies its wilder, cheaper, quieter sibling: a glacial lake inside Triglav National Park with meadows to the shoreline and water warm enough for long August swims. Base yourself in Ribčev Laz or Stara Fužina, canoe in the mornings and ride the Vogel cable car for the best view in Slovenia. Crucially, hotels here cost roughly half of Bled's rates for scenery that arguably beats it.

Things to do
-
Vogel cable car
The lift climbs to about 1,500 metres for a view straight down the lake towards Triglav, with easy ridge walks leading off in summer.
-
Savica waterfall
A short, steep stepped path leads to the fall that feeds the lake, spilling out of a cliff in a distinctive A shape.
-
Mostnica gorge
From Stara Fužina, a gentle riverside walk follows a narrow limestone gorge with clear pools and, so the story goes, one shaped like an elephant.
-
Church of St John the Baptist
The small church by the stone bridge holds medieval frescoes and is the most photographed building on the lake.
-
Swimming and canoeing
The water is clean enough to drink and warms to comfortable by August. Canoes and paddleboards are hired from the eastern shore.
-
Triglav National Park trails
Paths from the lake climb to high pastures and mountain huts, including the long approach to Slovenia's highest peak.

Where to stay
Apartments and rooms in the villages, a few mid-size hotels, mountain huts above and large lakeside campsites. Nothing here is luxurious, and prices sit well under Bled's.

Best base overall
Ribcev Laz
The little settlement at the lake's eastern end, by the stone bridge and the church, with hotels, boat hire and the bus stop. It is small, so book early in summer.

Stara Fuzina
A farming village minutes from the shore with apartments, a dairy museum and gentle walks up the Mostnica gorge. The lake is a short walk rather than on your doorstep.
