Lombok, Indonesia

Kuta

Not to be confused with Bali's Kuta, Lombok's version is what surfers mean when they say 'Bali twenty years ago': a small town ringed by scalloped bays — Tanjung Aan's twin crescents, Selong Belanak's beginner-perfect rollers — connected by hills where buffalo have right of way.

Why go

Not the Kuta of Bali, but a small town on Lombok's dry south coast, backed by hills where cattle graze and fringed by a series of scalloped bays. Surf is why most people come, with breaks for every level within a short boat ride of the beach. Away from the water there are warungs, a weekly market and roads that turn to dust through the dry season.

The international airport is only twenty minutes away, which makes the town easier to reach than its atmosphere suggests. A week gives time to learn to surf and see the rest of the island, from Rinjani's foothills to the Gili islands off the northwest and waterfalls in the interior. May to September is dry with the most consistent swell. Development is arriving fast, so expect building work.

From our guides

Boat out to Gerupuk for wave options at every level. Warung meals still cost pennies. May to September brings dry days and consistent swell; mornings are glassiest.

Things to do

  1. Tanjung Aan

Two crescents of coarse pale sand under a headland, with calm swimming and a long walk out across the flats at low tide.

  2. Selong Belanak

A wide, shallow bay with soft rolling waves, which makes it the standard place to take a first surf lesson.

  3. Gerupuk

A bay east of town where boats drop surfers on several reef breaks suiting different levels, tides and abilities.

  4. Bukit Merese

A grassy headland above Tanjung Aan with a short climb and a wide view along the south coast at sunset.

  5. Mawun and Mawi

Two more bays to the west, one a calm horseshoe, the other a serious reef break for experienced surfers only.

  6. Sasak villages

Inland settlements such as Sade keep traditional thatched houses and ikat weaving, and are set up for short visits.

    Kuta village

The small town itself, with warungs, surf shops, scooter hire and the widest choice of rooms, all within walking distance. It has grown fast and the main street can be dusty and loud.

    Tanjung Aan and Mandalika

Resorts spaced along the coast road near the twin crescent bay, with sand you will remember and very little around you. You need a scooter or a car for everything.

Worth knowing before you book: May to September has the best weather and swell, and rooms are tightest then. Ask about generator backup and water supply, as both can be patchy outside the main village.

Etiquette
Lombok is predominantly Muslim and more conservative than Bali. Cover up in town and villages, and be aware of Ramadan timings.
Driving
Scooters are how everyone gets about and the coast road is potholed in places. Wear a helmet and avoid riding after dark.
