Kranjska Gora
Slovenia's neat little World Cup resort is beginner-scaled in the best way: slopes drop straight to the village, gradients stay merciful and prices for lessons, passes and strudel undercut the Alps proper by a healthy margin.

Why go
A small resort in the top corner of Slovenia, where the Julian Alps meet the Austrian and Italian borders. The slopes are wide, north-facing and mostly gentle, running down to a village of a few streets and a lake. The place is built around beginners and families rather than expert skiers, and the World Cup slalom that arrives each winter is an unlikely bonus for a hill this size.
Ljubljana airport is under an hour away, which makes a long weekend viable. Costs for lessons, passes and food undercut the larger Alpine resorts noticeably. The altitude is low, so January and February are the safe bets for snow. In summer the same village becomes a cycling and walking base, with the Vršič pass and Lake Bled close by. Strong skiers will exhaust the terrain quickly.

From our guides
The Julian Alps do the scenery honours, with Lake Jasna and the Vršič pass road nearby for rest days. It sits low, so book January or February for the surest snow. Ljubljana airport is under an hour away — a genuinely easy weekend learn.

Things to do
-
Nursery and blue slopes
Runs come down to the edge of the village, gradients stay merciful and the lifts are short, which is exactly what a first week needs.
-
Lake Jasna
A pair of small green lakes just south of the village, with a statue of the Zlatorog chamois and the mountains reflected in still water.
-
Vršič pass
Fifty hairpin bends climb over into the Soča valley, past the Russian Chapel. Closed by snow in winter and glorious by bike or car in summer.
-
Planica
The ski-flying valley next door holds the largest ski-flying hill in the world and a Nordic centre with cross-country trails.
-
Triglav National Park
Slovenia's only national park starts here, with marked walks along the Sava and longer routes up into the peaks.
-
Lake Bled
Forty minutes away, with an island church, a clifftop castle and a lakeside path that takes an easy hour and a half.

Getting around
The village is small enough to walk, with the lifts at its edge and free ski buses in winter. Lake Jasna is a fifteen-minute stroll and the Vršič pass road climbs from the village in summer.
Public transport: Buses run from Ljubljana and Jesenice, but they are not frequent and a car helps for the Vršič pass and the wider Julian Alps.

Kranjska Gora centre
The village core sits within a few minutes' walk of the main slopes and ski school, with hotels, rentals and restaurants all on one street. It is busy at the lift queues each morning.

Podkoren
An old village by the World Cup slalom slope, with farm rooms and small pensions and almost no evening activity. Charming, but you walk or bus to the main lifts.

Mojstrana
Cheaper family apartments at the mouth of the Vrata valley, good for summer walking as well as winter. It is fifteen minutes from the ski area, so mornings need organising.

Worth knowing before you book: The village sits low, so snow is surest in January and February and early season can disappoint. The World Cup race weekend in March books out the valley.
