Komodo

The world's largest lizard lives on a handful of scorched islands between Sumbawa and Flores, and meeting one — three metres of muscle and patience — recalibrates your respect for reptiles.

Why go

The islands strung between Sumbawa and Flores are dry, ochre and rumpled, quite unlike the green Indonesia most people picture. They sit in fast, cold currents that feed some of the richest reefs anywhere, so the contrast between parched hills above the waterline and what lies below is the whole appeal. Boats are the only way through, and most days here are spent on one.

Labuan Bajo has grown from a fishing harbour into the base for all of it: liveaboards, day boats, dive schools and flights from Bali. Give it three or four nights, or a week aboard if diving is the point. April to June and September to October are the sweet spots. Divers should be honest about their experience of current, and anyone expecting long soft beaches will be surprised.

From our guides

Boat trips from Labuan Bajo pair dragon walks on Rinca or Komodo with snorkelling at Manta Point and the pink-tinged sands of Pantai Merah. Visit April to June, when the hills are still green and the crowds thinner.

Things to do

  1. Padar island ridge

The stepped climb to a ridge above three curved bays gives the region its defining view, and it is best at first light before the heat arrives.

  2. Diving the currents

Sites such as Batu Bolong and Castle Rock run fast and rich, with reef sharks, trevally and coral in extraordinary condition. Not beginner water.

  3. Manta Point

Mantas gather at shallow cleaning stations through the year, and snorkellers can watch them from the surface without diving.

  4. Pink Beach

Red coral fragments mixed into white sand give the shoreline a genuine pink cast, with easy snorkelling just offshore.

  5. Dragon walks on Rinca

The nearest island for seeing Komodo dragons, always with a ranger, on short marked circuits through dry hills.

  6. Labuan Bajo harbour

The town's hillside bars and the water taxis out to nearby islets turn the end of the day into an event.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Labuan Bajo, Manggarai Barat (LBJ)

Nearest airport to Komodo, about 48km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo (LBJ) on Flores has direct flights from Bali and Jakarta and sits about ten minutes by taxi from the waterfront where the boats leave.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Komodo and Rinca are reached only by boat, roughly one to three hours each way depending on the island and vessel. Day trips and multi-day liveaboards both combine dragon walks with snorkelling stops.

Public transport: There is no scheduled ferry to the park islands. Book a shared or private boat in Labuan Bajo.

  • Best base overall

    Labuan Bajo town

Flores's port town is the launchpad for every trip to Rinca and Komodo, with hotels stacked up the hill for the sunset view. Expect construction dust and scooter noise.

    Kanawa and the nearby islands

Bungalow resorts on small islands inside the park, where the snorkelling starts at the jetty. Boat transfers run once a day, and facilities are basic by design.

Worth knowing before you book: Book the boat trip and the hotel separately and check whether park fees are included, as they usually are not. April to June is the sweet spot before the July rush.
