Koh Rong Sanloem
An hour's ferry from Sihanoukville, Sanloem is the quiet sibling island: a crescent of squeaky white sand at Saracen Bay, bioluminescent plankton on moonless nights and bungalows that cost less than a London round of drinks.

Why go
The calmer of the two main islands off Sihanoukville, with a long curve of pale sand at Saracen Bay on the east side and quieter bays reachable on foot through the forest. There is no road network and very little to do beyond swimming, reading and walking between beaches. Power runs on generators and often stops overnight, which makes the evenings dark, warm and full of stars.
An hour or so by ferry from the mainland makes this an easy addition to a Cambodian trip after Phnom Penh or Angkor, and three nights is about right. November to May gives the calmest, clearest water, while the rainy season from June brings squalls and rougher crossings. Anyone who needs air conditioning all night, reliable internet or medical facilities nearby should think twice.

From our guides
Electricity can be part-time and Wi-Fi temperamental — treat that as the feature it is. November to May offers the calmest, clearest water.

Things to do
-
Saracen Bay
The main beach, a two-kilometre arc of white sand facing east, so the sun comes up over the water and the swimming stays calm all morning.
-
Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach
On the western side, reached by forest paths of twenty to forty minutes, both facing the sunset with rougher and emptier water.
-
Bioluminescent plankton
On moonless nights the water lights up as you move through it. Go on a dark night, well away from the beach lights.
-
M'Pai Bay
The northern village is more backpacker than resort, with cheap food, local families going about their day and a small working harbour.
-
Kayaking the coast
The bays hold modest coral and clear water, and most guesthouses lend kayaks for paddling between them when the sea is flat.
-
Koh Rong
The larger sister island half an hour away, with more nightlife, longer beaches and the same clear sea.

Best base overall
Saracen Bay
The island's main crescent of white sand, with the widest choice of bungalows, restaurants and the ferry pier. It is also the only stretch that ever feels busy.

M'Pai Bay
A small fishing village in the north where backpacker guesthouses, cheap kitchens and a couple of bars cluster. The beach is narrow and the swimming is better elsewhere.

Quietest
Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach
Reached on foot across the island through jungle, these west-facing beaches have a handful of bungalow outfits and nothing else. Bring cash and a torch, and expect limited power.

Long Set Beach, Koh Rong
A short boat hop to the bigger island, where a long shallow beach has more choice of family rooms and easier boat connections. Koh Rong's party village is close, so pick your end.

Worth knowing before you book: Power is often generator-run and switched off overnight, and card payment is unreliable, so carry cash. The calm season runs roughly November to May; ferries can cancel in the monsoon.

Good to know
- Getting there
- Ferries leave Sihanoukville several times a day and take around 45 minutes to an hour. Buy a return and confirm the time of the last boat back.
- Power and internet
- Electricity is generated locally and may be switched off overnight. Download whatever you need before leaving the mainland.
- Cash
- There are no dependable cash machines. Bring US dollars and Cambodian riel for the whole stay and expect cash-only bills.
- Sandflies
- Biting sandflies on the sand at dawn and dusk are the island's real nuisance. Use repellent and stay off the sand at those hours.
- Timing
- November to May is dry with the calmest sea. Crossings can be cancelled in the rainy season, so leave slack before a flight.
