Kayaking the Verdon Gorge

Europe's grandest canyon runs an improbable shade of turquoise, and paddling into it from Lac de Sainte-Croix is the classic move: hire a kayak or pedalo at the Pont du Galetas and slip beneath limestone walls 700 metres high, swimming from any gravel beach that takes your fancy.

Kayaking the Verdon Gorge, France

Happens around Verdon Gorge, France — nearest airport Nice, Alpes-Maritimes (NCE), about 72km away.

The experience

The Verdon cuts a trench up to 700 metres deep through limestone in upper Provence, and the water at the bottom runs an unlikely opaque turquoise from suspended minerals. From the bridge at the Galetas end, where the gorge opens into Lac de Sainte-Croix, you paddle upstream into shade and increasingly vertical walls. Progress is slow, the acoustics are strange, and gravel beaches appear just as your arms start complaining.

Give it a morning and build a Provence trip around it: Moustiers-Sainte-Marie above the lake, the clifftop Route des Crêtes, lavender on the Valensole plateau in early July. Water is warmest in late July and August, when queues for hire boats form well before nine. September holds the same colour with a fraction of the people. This is high country, so evenings cool sharply whatever the day has done.

From our guides

July water is warmest; September has the same colour and half the flotilla. Arrive by 9am in high summer — the hire queues are their own endurance sport.

Make a trip of it

  1. Pont du Galetas

The bridge where the lake meets the gorge is the launch point, with hire kayaks, pedalos and electric boats on the shore below it.

  2. Lac de Sainte-Croix

The turquoise reservoir behind the gorge is warm enough to swim in all summer, with beaches at Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon and Les Salles-sur-Verdon.

  3. Route des Crêtes

A one-way clifftop loop above La Palud-sur-Verdon with belvederes looking straight down into the canyon. Griffon vultures ride the thermals here.

  4. Sentier Blanc-Martel

The classic gorge walk drops to the canyon floor for around 14 kilometres, with ladders and unlit tunnels. Bring a torch and arrange the shuttle bus.

  5. Moustiers-Sainte-Marie

A village of faience workshops pinned to the cliff above the lake, with a chapel reached by a long stepped path and a star strung across the ravine.

Getting there

    Nice, Alpes-Maritimes (NCE)

Nearest airport to Verdon Gorge, about 72km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Moustiers-Sainte-Marie

Around two hours by car north from Saint-Tropez (LTT), inland through the Var to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. Nice and Marseille airports are the more common arrival points and take a similar time.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

The Pont du Galetas hire base on Lac de Sainte-Croix is about fifteen minutes by car below the village, with car parks that fill early in summer. From the water you paddle straight into the gorge mouth.

Public transport: Seasonal buses link a few gorge villages, but they are infrequent and no use for an early start.

Good to know

Timing
Hire queues at the Galetas start early. Be on the water by nine in July and August, or come in June or September instead.
Water levels
The river is dam-regulated and levels can change with little warning. Follow posted notices and never leave kit on the gravel bars.
Pack this
The water is cold even in August. Bring sunscreen, a hat, water shoes and a dry bag for anything you mind about.
Driving
Gorge roads are narrow, winding and busy with motorbikes and cyclists. Parking at the popular belvederes fills by mid-morning.
Cash or card
Some hire kiosks and village markets still prefer cash, so carry euros in small notes.
