Kayaking the Benagil caves

The Benagil dome — a cathedral of golden rock with a skylight worn through its roof — is the Algarve's most famous sight, and arriving by kayak beats every crowded boat tour.

Kayaking the Benagil caves, Algarve, Portugal

Happens around Algarve, Portugal — nearest airport Faro (FAO), about 32km away.

The experience

The Algarve cliffs between Albufeira and Carvoeiro are soft golden sandstone, undercut by the Atlantic into arches, stacks and sea caves. The best known of them has a collapsed roof that drops a circle of sunlight onto its own private beach. Paddling in from the little cove at Benagil takes minutes, and a kayak goes where the tour boats cannot, nosing into low arches and narrow slots along the base of the cliff.

Trips run from spring to autumn and depend entirely on the swell, so build in a spare day. Morning water is flattest, and the light shaft is at its best around the middle of the day. This coast is set up for a week of beaches, with Lagos, Carvoeiro and Ferragudo all close, and the clifftop walk between Benagil and Praia da Marinha makes an obvious follow-up.

From our guides

Paddle from Benagil beach along a coast drilled with grottoes, nosing into caves the swell allows. Morning trips get the calmest water and the light shaft at its best. Waterproof your phone; you'll want it.

Make a trip of it

  1. The dome at Benagil

The famous cave, with its sand floor and circular opening overhead. Landing inside is restricted, so expect to look rather than lounge.

  2. Praia da Marinha

One of the Algarve's most photographed beaches, arches and all, a short walk east along the clifftop from Benagil.

  3. Seven Hanging Valleys trail

The coastal path from Praia da Marinha towards Carvoeiro runs roughly six kilometres past blowholes, arches and coves you cannot reach from land.

  4. Algar Seco

Weathered rock formations and a natural stone window at Carvoeiro, reached on foot down a long staircase and free to wander.

  5. Praia de Benagil

The launch beach is tiny and pretty in its own right, with a slipway that gets thoroughly busy by ten in the morning.

Getting there

  1. Fly to

    Faro (FAO)

Nearest airport to Algarve, about 32km away as the crow flies.

  2. Then

    To Carvoeiro

About 45 minutes by car west from Faro (FAO) along the A22 motorway to Carvoeiro or Lagoa. Airport transfers and hire cars are the usual choice.

  3. On the ground

    Getting around

Benagil village is a ten-minute drive from Carvoeiro; kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are hired on the small beach itself, and the cave is about twenty minutes of paddling east. Boat tours also leave from Carvoeiro and Portimao.

Public transport: Buses serve the larger Algarve towns but reaching Benagil beach itself without a car or a booked tour is awkward.

Where to base yourself

Low-rise apartments and aparthotels above the coves, family guesthouses inland, and a few cliff-edge resorts. Villa rentals dominate; big city-style hotels are rare.

  • Best base overall

    Carvoeiro

A cliff-top former fishing village a few minutes west of Benagil, with a small beach at the foot of the steps and boat operators on the sand. Central parking is the daily battle.

  • Best with children

    Armacao de Pera

A long, flat, lifeguarded town beach with shallow water and easy pushchair access, plus supermarkets and a promenade. It is far less pretty than the cove villages, which is the compromise.

Find stays in Armacao de Pera
  • Best value

    Ferragudo

Whitewashed and still genuinely lived in, across the river from Portimao, with guesthouses well under Carvoeiro prices. You will want a car, because the bus link into the cove country is slow.

    Find stays in Ferragudo
  • Closest to the sights

    Benagil village

A handful of apartments above the launch beach itself, so you can be on the water before the tour boats arrive. There is almost nothing here beyond two restaurants and a steep lane.

Worth knowing before you book: July and August book out by spring and most apartments impose weekly Saturday-to-Saturday changeovers. Shoulder months are cheaper and the sea is calmer for paddling.

Good to know

Book ahead
Kayak and paddleboard trips sell out in July and August. Reserve a morning slot several days in advance.
Sea conditions
Trips are cancelled on swell and a calm forecast can turn. Keep a spare day if the cave is the reason you came.
Pack this
A waterproof phone case, a strap for sunglasses, reef shoes and sunscreen. Everything in the kayak gets wet.
Parking
The lane down to Benagil is narrow with very limited parking. Arrive early, or leave the car up in the village and walk down.
Swimming
You will be in open water on a sit-on-top kayak, so being comfortable swimming is a fair requirement. Children usually double up with an adult.
