Karlovy Vary
The Habsburg empire's favourite spa town, a wedding-cake canyon of colonnades and pastel facades where Beethoven, Goethe and half of nineteenth-century Europe took the cure.

Why go
A spa town wedged into a narrow river valley in western Bohemia, built almost entirely for the business of taking the waters. Colonnades in cream and gold line the Teplá, wooded hills close in on both sides, and the whole place has the ordered calm of somewhere designed for slow walking. Hot mineral springs surface all over the centre, and people drink from them as they stroll, which is the local ritual and the point of coming.
Two or three nights covers the town, and it works well as a break from Prague, a couple of hours away by road or rail. Treatments need booking ahead at the larger spa houses. Autumn turns the wooded slopes copper, and the film festival fills every bed in early July. Anyone after beaches, nightlife or a fast-moving city will find this gentle to the point of sedate.

From our guides
Sip the hot mineral water from a porcelain spouted cup as you promenade — it tastes medicinal, which is rather the point — then book a proper treatment at the Alžbětiny Lázně baths. Stay at the Grandhotel Pupp, an inspiration for Wes Anderson, and come in autumn when the wooded hills turn copper.

Things to do
-
Mill Colonnade
The grandest of the colonnades, a long neoclassical arcade with columns and several springs running beneath it. Free to walk through and busiest mid-morning.
-
The Vřídlo geyser
The hottest spring throws mineral water several metres into the air inside a modernist pavilion, and the surrounding hall is where most people fill their cups.
-
Porcelain drinking cups
The flat, spouted cups sold everywhere are the correct way to drink the water and a genuinely useful souvenir. Sip slowly, because the mineral content is strong.
-
Diana lookout tower
A funicular climbs the wooded hill behind the grand hotels to a tower with the whole valley below. Walk back down through the forest paths.
-
Becherovka bitters
The town's herbal liqueur has been made here since the nineteenth century and has a museum devoted to it. Drink it cold, or with tonic as a Beton.
-
Thermal bathing
The spa houses offer carbon-dioxide baths, peat wraps and mineral pools, and several take day visitors. Booking is essential in season.

Getting around
The spa quarter along the Tepla river is a long, narrow promenade closed to most traffic, so it is walked end to end in half an hour. Funiculars climb the wooded hills to the lookout towers.
Public transport: Frequent coaches from Prague, plus local buses and two funiculars. The spa town is designed for strolling, which is rather the treatment.

Best base overall
The spa quarter
Along the Tepla between Stara Louka and the Mlynske colonnade, where the grand houses, the springs and the treatment halls sit together. It is the most expensive part of town and busy with promenading day visitors.

The villa district on the wooded slope above the spa, quiet, leafy and full of belle epoque houses turned into small hotels. The walk back up after dinner is a steep one.

Worth knowing before you book: Spa packages usually require a minimum of several nights and get cheaper the longer you stay. The film festival in early July takes every room in town.

Good to know
- The water
- Each spring runs at a different temperature and mineral strength, and drinking too much too fast will upset your stomach. Small cupfuls, with walking in between.
- Book ahead
- Serious spa treatments and doctors' consultations are scheduled days in advance, so arrange them before you arrive.
- Getting there
- Buses and trains run from Prague in roughly two to three hours, and the coach is usually the quicker of the two.
- Cash or card
- Cards work almost everywhere. Pay in Czech crowns rather than accepting the euro conversion offered at the terminal.
- Timing
- Late September and October give the best colour in the surrounding woods. The film festival in early July books the town out.
