Why go
The clubbing reputation is entirely earned and entirely incomplete. Between May and October the island runs the world's most concentrated season of DJ residencies, sunset bars and daytime pool parties, at prices that can empty an account in a weekend. The rest of it is a Mediterranean island with a walled Renaissance old town, salt pans full of flamingos, pine-backed coves on the north coast and a stubborn hippy inheritance from the 1970s.
Balance is the whole art here. Alternate late nights with north-coast beaches, markets and boat trips, and stay somewhere that matches your intentions, since Sant Antoni and Playa d'en Bossa are loud and Santa Gertrudis and the north are not. June and September have the same sea and half the chaos of August. Formentera, half an hour away by ferry, provides the calm counterweight.

From our guides
Ibiza's ecosystem runs from Café Mambo's sunset strip through beach clubs to superclubs — Ushuaïa's open-air pool parties, Hï's laser cathedral — where the planet's biggest DJs hold summer residencies. It costs a fortune; budget accordingly and balance the damage with north-coast coves and hippy-market days. First-timers: June or September, never August.

Things to do
-
Dalt Vila
The UNESCO-listed walled town above the port, with Renaissance bastions, a cathedral at the top and views over the harbour. Best walked in the early evening.
-
Ses Salines
Salt pans turned nature reserve, where flamingos feed in the shallows and a long sandy beach fills the southern tip of the island.
-
Cala Comte
West-facing rocky coves over turquoise water with islets offshore, and the island's most reliable sunset outside the bars of Sant Antoni.
-
Benirràs drums
A northern bay where a drumming crowd gathers on Sunday evenings to see the sun down, a direct survival of the island's hippy era.
-
Es Vedrà
A sheer limestone island rising from the sea off the south-west coast, best seen from the cliffs near Cala d'Hort. Endless myths, all of them unverifiable.
-
Hippy markets
Long-running markets at Es Canar and Sant Carles sell craft, clothing and a fair amount of nonsense, with live music and a genuinely old-fashioned mood.

-
Fly to
Ibiza (IBZ)
Nearest airport to Ibiza, about 12km away as the crow flies.

To Ibiza Town
About 15 minutes by taxi from Ibiza airport (IBZ) into Ibiza Town, or half an hour to Sant Antoni and the sunset strip. Airport buses run to both through the summer.

Getting around
Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni are walkable in themselves, and club buses shuttle between the big venues, the beaches and the resorts through the night in season. The north-coast coves are a different matter and want wheels.
Public transport: Summer buses between the resorts and the clubs are frequent and run late; out of season they all but vanish, and the quiet north is poorly served either way.

Where to stay
Everything from party hotels and beach clubs with rooms to agroturismo farmhouses inland and villa rentals. Budget beds cluster in Sant Antoni, and there is little in the way of quiet mid-range on the coast.
-
Best base overall
Ibiza Town
Dalt Vila, the marina and the port bars sit together, with buses and the discobus to everywhere else. Rooms inside the walls are small and the port area stays noisy until sunrise.

Best for nightlife
Playa d'en Bossa
The strip of beach clubs and the biggest open-air venues, where you can crawl home along the sand. It is also charmless by daylight and the bass carries into every room.

Santa Eularia des Riu
A calm, shallow bay, a proper promenade and family hotels away from the club circuit. The trade-off is a taxi or bus for anything that happens after midnight.

Best value
Sant Antoni
Rooms cost far less here, the sunset strip is famous and ferries reach the north coast coves. The West End's stag-party reputation is entirely deserved, so choose your street carefully.

Worth knowing before you book: August prices roughly double and villas go by February. Check the club calendar before booking, since opening and closing parties fill the whole island.

Good to know
- Season
- The clubs open from around May and close with a run of closing parties in early October. Outside that window the island is quiet and half-shut.
- Budget
- Club entry, drinks and beach-club sunbeds cost far more than mainland Spain. Decide what you are prepared to spend before you arrive, not during.
- Transport at night
- Taxis are scarce after clubs empty and unlicensed drivers appear. Use the night bus network between resorts, or book a licensed car in advance.
- Driving
- Drink-driving checks are frequent and penalties severe. Hire cars are useful by day for the coves, but never for a night out.
- Beach coves
- The best northern calas have small car parks that fill before eleven. Go early, or go late in the afternoon when the day crowd leaves.
