The experience
The landscape does most of the work here. Volcanic ash compacted into soft rock, then eroded into cones, chimneys and folded valleys, and people carved houses, churches and entire cities into it. Seen from a basket at first light, with dozens of other balloons rising through the same pink air, it reads as something closer to another planet. The flight itself is calm, roughly an hour long and demands nothing of you.
Base yourself in Göreme or a neighbouring village for three nights, which gives two possible flight mornings plus time on the ground. Afternoons go to the rock-cut churches, underground cities and valley walks that make sense of what you saw from above. Winter has the crispest air but the most cancellations; spring and autumn balance conditions and crowds. Flights are grounded by wind without warning, so never book one for your departure day.

From our guides
No skill required beyond climbing aboard. Fly at first light when the air is calmest, then spend the afternoon exploring underground cities. Book two mornings in case wind cancels the first.

Make a trip of it
-
Take-off before dawn
Baskets are inflated in the dark and lift as the sun comes up, which is when the valleys fill with colour and a hundred other envelopes ignite around you.
-
Göreme Open-Air Museum
A monastic complex of rock-cut chapels with Byzantine frescoes still bright on the ceilings. Small doorways, painted vaults and a queue that eases by late afternoon.
-
Love and Rose valleys
The tall fairy chimneys the balloons drift between are also walkable, on trails from Göreme and Çavuşin. Late afternoon turns the rock pink and gold.
-
Derinkuyu underground city
Eight levels of tunnels, stables, kitchens and ventilation shafts cut into rock, capable of sheltering thousands. Not for the claustrophobic, but remarkable.
-
Uçhisar castle
A rock outcrop riddled with rooms and passages, rising above the village. The climb is short and the view takes in the whole landscape you flew over.
-
Cave rooms
Sleeping in a room carved into the rock is part of the experience here, and the villages are full of converted dwellings with terraces facing the valleys.
Getting there
-
Fly to
Nevşehir (NAV)
Nearest airport to Göreme, about 29km away as the crow flies.
-
Then
To Goreme
About 40 minutes by car or shuttle from Nevsehir (NAV) to Goreme. Kayseri airport has more flights and is around an hour and a quarter away, with shuttle minibuses meeting arrivals at both.

Getting around
Balloon operators collect you from your cave hotel at around 4am and return you after the flight, so no transport of your own is needed. Goreme is small and walkable, and the open-air museum is a 15-minute stroll.
Public transport: Local dolmus minibuses link Goreme, Urgup, Avanos and Uchisar through the day, which covers most of what visitors want. A car or a tour helps for the underground cities and far valleys.

Where to base yourself
Cave hotels carved into the tuff, from simple pensions to luxurious suites with private terraces. Almost no chains, and rooms can be windowless, cool and slightly damp.
-
Best base overall
Goreme
Balloons lift from the valleys either side, pick-ups come first, and cave hotels here have terraces built for watching the launch. It is the busiest, most touristed village, and steep to walk.

Best for couples
Uchisar
Higher and calmer, gathered under its castle rock, with the best panoramic terraces in the region and smarter cave suites. Fewer restaurants, and you will want a taxi in the evening.
Find stays in Uchisar -
Best with children
Urgup
A working town rather than a showpiece, with larger hotels, flat streets, pharmacies and proper restaurants. The balloon views are more distant and pick-ups start earlier.
Find stays in Urgup -
Quietest
Ortahisar
A genuine village between the two, with restored stone houses and almost no coach traffic. Very little happens after dinner, which is either the point or the problem.

Worth knowing before you book: Flights cancel for wind far more often than operators advertise, so book at least two consecutive mornings and keep your hotel stay long enough to absorb one failure.

Good to know
- Book two mornings
- Wind cancels flights frequently, especially in winter. Reserve early in your stay so a failed morning can be repeated rather than lost.
- Early start
- Pick-ups are typically around four in the morning, with flights landing shortly after sunrise. Plan a lazy first half of the day afterwards.
- What to wear
- Pre-dawn temperatures can drop below freezing even when afternoons are warm. Wear layers, closed shoes and a hat; the burner keeps your head warm enough.
- Landing
- Passengers are asked to crouch and hold handles for touchdown, which can be bumpy. Anyone with back or knee problems should say so beforehand.
- Getting there
- Nevşehir and Kayseri airports both connect to Istanbul, with transfers of roughly forty minutes and an hour respectively to the main villages.
